shigatu ha kimi no uso OST1

One thing I know a lot of anime fans rave about is the music from their favorite shows; I am no exclusion to this. Music is something that can take a seemingly trivial scene and turn it into something that can move the very essence of your being, and depending on what music is present can determine the outlook of the scene itself.

This is my absolute favorite thing about music, it often ends up the deciding factor as to whether or not an anime is incredible or just another of its kind.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Soundtrack

Masaru Yokoyama

In Your Lie in April we’ve all heard at this point how it’s a drama, a love story or a slice of life. What we haven’t yet talked about is their choice in music and what they did with it. To explain, take the first scene where Kaori and Kousei are playing together. They were playing a classical piece; however in the background you may not the subtle bass beats and the miniscule changes made to give each piece its own feel and displaying more the emotion behind the music with less of the dialogue. With that being said, the music itself is a classical enthusiasts dream. They managed to take a lot of the bigger songs and transform them in ways to fit the moments without taking away from the original intention of the song itself. You may think this is something that can be done simply, but it’s really not! It goes to show the effort put into the sounds that Masaru Yokoyama put into it all.

The Moments

The music without the combination of the correct moment is just, well, music. The placement of music is key for a moment and that’s where the Sound Director Jin Aketagawa really proves his merit. Outside of the competitions (really those are amazing and well-chosen musical choices as well), such as when the fireflies are dancing around the young musicians and the music just makes you lean forward with this intense anticipation. Not every anime has the ability to make me close my eyes to enjoy the music by itself; but this is definitely one of them if not my new personal favorite. If you haven’t yet heard the music and you’re a supporter of the classical genre, I highly suggest checking out the entire OST here!

Overall this anime is about being a musician, making the music your own instead of playing for a committee, so you can expect to hear some very incredible sounds. From the trills, to the great virtuoso pieces like Chopin’s Etude Op. 25, No. 11 and Camille Saint-Saens – Introduction et Rondo Capriccioso, Your Lie in April is one show you don’t want to miss hearing!

[Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (Your Lie in April)] 6 Most Transformative Moments!

[ad_top1 class="mb40"]
Your Lie in April dvd What is your first impression of classical music? Snobbish, boring, enigmatic, reserved? A couple of years ago “Nodame Contabile” presented to us a world of classical music that is creative, fun, deeply emotional and passionate. A couple of years later, Naoshi Arakawa, a Japanese mangaka and the author and artist behind “Your Lie in April”, tries to show us the transformative power of classical music, how it hurts and how it heals, how it isolates and how it connects; how it leads people into deep seas of desperation and depression, and how it lifts them back up to great joy and ecstasy. With poetic lines and passionate melodies, in “Your Lie in April,” we see, and feel, how classical music reaches into the depths of our hearts, revealing to us the truth of our existence, our fears and our hopes, and urges us, eagerly, to confront them, with the strength of music. And of course, with anime we would always have love and struggle, music deals with the struggles, so people could reside in love. Now let us review the six most transformative moments in “Your Lie in April.” [ad_top2 class="mt40"]

1. When Kousei Arima first met Kaori Miyazono (Episode 1)

shigatu wa kimi no uso recap 01 This is the scene where Kousei's life changes. His life trajectory of playing the piano was dull, stoic, stressful, and full of hurt. Classical music to him was a mechanical instrument, leading him to numerous prizes as well as deeper into his mother's prison. The piano was his curse, but at the same time, it was also all that he had left. His life after he stopped playing the piano, a while after his mother's death, was pale and stagnant. As Tsubaki, Kousei's childhood friend, puts it, his time stopped, that day, on the stage, when he was no longer able to hear the sound of his own piano. He was never able to feel passion in anything since then. At the moment when he sees Kaori in the park standing on a playground dome, playing the melodica, light and color comes back to his eyes. The whole world lights up and starts to sparkle with a spectrum of colors of all possibilities and expectations. This girl, the beautiful, energetic, and cheerful girl who plays the melodica and who is actually a violinist, is going to pull Kousei out of the drowning deep seas of darkness, and back to life, with music.

2. Kousei and Kaori's duet at a competition (Episode 4)

shiagatsu ha kimi no uso recap 02 Although Kaori's unconventional performance during the first round of her violin contest kept her from winning first place, she was highly adored by the audiences and entered the second round of the contest through audience nomination. She asks, more like coerces, Kousei to be her accompanist. On stage, they enter the piece, Saint-Saëns' Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, op.28, slowly and steadily. Soon Kaori goes off trail, interpreting the notes and scores in her own ways, with Kousei closely catching up. As the chemistry between them grow, Kousei falls into the hallucinations of his mother. The notes and sound of his piano starts to slip away into bubbles of silence. He panics and lifts his hands from the piano. Soon after he stopped playing, Kaori puts down her bow, turns to Kousei, smiles and says, “again.” And this is all that is needed to pull him back up. Kousei focuses his gaze and mind on Kaori, concentrating on her vigor and life and music. Their music comes back to life. Their notes complement and compete with each other as the chemistry between them expands. The audiences are captured by their passionate performance. The judges found soloists; Kousei found his piano.

3. Kousei carrying Tsubaki home on his back (Episode 6)

shiagatsu ha kimi no uso recap 03 While Kousei's gaze follows Kaori and picks the piano back up, Tsubaki notices a widening distance between her and Kousei. As much as she wants Kousei to play the piano and move on, she feels that Kousei is embarking on a journey to an unknown world, with Kaori, without her. Tsubaki has always been with Kousei and they are always together. Tsubaki is unable to grasp the true shape of her feelings and is deeply troubled by it. In the mean time, most of the sports teams of their school are going through the last gaming season, and Tsubaki's softbal team lost their game. While she is walking home with a teammate, Kousei meets her in the middle of a crossroad. He wraps her swollen ankle with ice-packs and carries her on his back. They walk quietly and slowly back home along the train tracks, chit-chatting about how Tsubaki carried Kousei back home with a sprained ankle when they were little. “Now it's my turn to carry you,” says Kousei, “you don't have to be strong in front of me.” And Tsubaki starts to cry. Despite the different worlds and diverse paths towards which they're heading, they are still together, with the trains rushing by, their ankles hurt, crying, and supporting each other. [ad_middle]

4. Emi's performance (Episode 8)

shiagatsu ha kimi no uso recap 04 When Kousei was still attending competitions and winning prizes as a young piano prodigy, he was the target of admiration and rivalry for most young (more accurately, children) pianists and musicians (including Kaori). Among the mass pool of admirers and competitors, Emi is one of the most fervent. Her obssession with Kousei started when she heard Kousei playing at a concert with emotional devotion and great compassion in his music. Through his music, she saw a whole different world (of sunflowers and warm summer breeze). And it was at that moment, that she decided to give up everything else and become a pianist: a pianist who is able to create music that would lead listeners to the devotion of becoming a pianist. However, Emi never heard the music of sunflowers and summer breeze in Kousei's music ever since. To her, the Kousei who is able to play the piano with utter accuracy is not the “real” Kousei. She wants the Kousei with sunflowers back; she wants the Kousei with devoted passion, not the Kousei with meticulous precision. After Kousei disappeared from the stage, Emi fell into a state of loss. She was playing well, but not well enough. Her music plateaued. This suffocating state dissolves when Emi hears that Kousei will be attending the competition. On stage, her music screams with vitality. She wants Kousei to see her, to hear her, and to know her. She wants to pull him back to the field of sunflowers and summer breeze with her music. Her music comes back to life, with Kousei's—her archenemy, her forever rival—return to the piano.

5. Kousei's piano and his image of Chopin (Episode 10)

shiagatsu ha kimi no uso recap 05 Kousei's on stage the second time. Part of his own will and part of Koari's insistence (coercion). After their ardent performances, Takeshi (another young pianist, male. who is also obsessed with Kousei, and sees him as his hero) and Emi waited for Kousei's appearance on stage with bated breath. Kousei proceeds through the first few stanzas neatly and accurately. However, as in his performance with Kaori, the sound of his piano soon leaves him and the deep sea of dark silence engulfs him once again. The notes of his piano becomes the noise of scattered marbles. He sees his mother. He hears his mother's curse. He lifts his fingers off the piano, again. Sitting quietly in front of the piano, Kousei thinks of Koari. He thinks of why she insisted on playing when she knew that they wouldn't stand a chance in the competition after both of them stopped. He thinks of her smile, her curvy blond her, the sweat rolling down her forehead, and her voice, saying brightly, “again.” Kousei takes his hands back to the piano. And plays Chopin (Etudes op.25-5). He sets his mind on Kaori, thinking of the hours during which they were practicing. He thinks of the old wooden music classroom where he would play on the grand piano and Kaori would be napping peacefully by the window. Where flakes of cherry blossom petals would float through broken window panes with the smell of chalk and cheers on the playground. He thinks of Kaori, and feels that, he will be able to play, even when he's all alone, he will be able to play, for her. This is when Kousei found his music.

6. Kousei and Kaori with fireflies (Episode 11)

shiagatsu ha kimi no uso recap 06 After Kousei's performance, Kaori receives an invitation for a gala concert held by the TOWA classical music institute. Kaori arbitrarily decides that they should play Fritz Kreisler's "Love's Sorrow." One night on their way home after practice, Kaori spots a field of fireflies. While they are admiring the ethereal beauty of them, Kaori asks Kousei how he feels about the concert. Kousei says that everyone has their own purposes and pursuits for music. For some, music expresses the self; for others, music is a vehicle to show love and adoration. Kaori then asks, “how about you, Kousei? What is driving you to play the piano?” “It's because you're here.” Kousei replys.

And here are the 6 most transformative moments in the past 12 episodes of “Your lie in April.” We walk through them with tears of sadness, joy, and relief. Now we see Kousei resurfacing from the darkness of silence by the guidance of Koari's brilliant light. When all seem to come back together and everyone seems to be moving on, we noticed that an imminent crisis is approaching, and Kaori is at the center.

K-ON!
haikyuu dvd
RedLine
This last set of recommendations will fall under a miscellaneous category. I’ve covered some very large genres in the past. The choices have been pretty varied, for the most part. There should be at least one anime that’s caught your attention by now. But, if that’s not the case, I’ve got three final selections for you. These are not all from the same genre. Instead, they’re from different areas that we haven’t touched on yet. One is a slice of life, another is a sports anime, and the last one is a gorgeous looking anime that may be a glimpse of where the medium is headed. Without further ado, here the last three recommended anime for beginners.

k-on sound track

K-On! Synopsis - From Anime News Network

It's Yui Hirasawa's first year in high school, and she's eagerly searching for a club to join. At the same time, Ritsu Tainaka, a drummer, and her friend Mio Akiyama, a bassist, are desperately trying to save the school's light music club, which is about to be disbanded due to lack of members. They manage to recruit Tsumugi Kotobuki to play the keyboard, meaning they only need one more member to get the club running again. Yui joins, thinking it will be an easy experience for her to play the castanets, the only instrument she knows. However, the other members think their new addition is actually a guitar prodigy...

Why Should You Watch K-On!

Guilty pleasure much? A lot of people may be unwilling to share their fondness of K-On! Cute girls doing playing cute and catchy music. Not very manly, and definitely not something you’d want to advertise to your friends. But, if you took a poll about slice of life recommendations this one is sure to come out near the top. Sometimes watching everyday type of interactions is more entertaining than viewing an epic adventure. You can take a break from intense battles and life or death situations to get a more intimate look at a person’s struggles and circumstances. You may come to find out that they may not be so different from your own. k-on wallpaper Contrary to what the genre’s description may be, these kind of shows are not snoozefests. They have their emotional moments, comedic moments, and moments of suspense. They can actually be really inspiring as well. Watching an average person overcome the odds gives you a totally different sensation than watching an unrelatable hero. Seeing them persevere through hardships empowers you to do the same. At least it has for me, on occasion. There is a second season and an OVA as well. But, the first season was a self-contained story. You’ve probably noticed that I’ve mostly recommended animes with relatively few episodes. That being the case, I’m only taking season 1 into consideration. So, for you beginners, watch season one and get a feel for the slice of life genre. If you enjoy it, by all means, go on ahead to season 2!

2. Haikyuu!!

haikyuu dvd

Haikyuu!! Synopsis - From Anime News Network

Shōyō Hinata began playing volleyball after seeing the "small giants" who played the sport when he was in elementary school. He suffers a crushing defeat in his first and last tournament in middle school at the hands of his rival Tobio Kageyama. So, Hinata joins Kurasuno High School's volleyball team, vowing revenge against Kageyama. However, Kageyama is also on Kurasuno's team. The former rivals form a legendary combo with Hinata's mobility and Kageyama's precision ball-handling. Together, they take on the local tournaments and vow to meet Kurasuno's fated rival school in the nationals.

Why Should You Watch Haikyuu!! ?

This volleyball themed anime is a great introduction to the sports genre. It isn’t as long as some of the more well-known sports anime: Hajime no Ippo, Kuroko no Basket, and The Prince of Tennis to name a few. But, it still holds up strong with just a season of episodes. It may just be because of the specific sport involved, but this show does not feel as hyper-masculine as other athletic series. It’s not just about becoming stronger, faster, and beating down your opponent. haikyuu Of course, all competitors want to do that. But, this show chooses to focus more on character development. It also does its best to make you feel attached to the whole team. Another plus of this series is that there aren’t any hyper-real abilities. People can’t spike the ball faster than the speed of light. Players can’t unlock a hidden talent that suddenly makes them ten times stronger than everyone else on the court. Haikyuu is based in reality as much as possible. It focuses on the tried and true story of “rivals becoming allies”. It’s enjoyable from beginning to end. And, if you do fall in love with this show, you’re in luck. Recently a second season was announced. But, there is no confirmation on the release date as of the time this article was written.

Boys over Flowers - Slashing in Spring 2015! 6 Yaoi/BL anime that would make your pink spring even pinker

[ad_top1 class="mb40"]
spring-2015-yaoi-anime-eyecatch

Flakes of white snow are melting into petals of cherry blossoms. The piercing wind has soften into warm breeze of spring. With the pink sentiment that often accompanies blooming flowers and chirping spring birds, we (by "we," I mean us Fujoshi comrades) like to imagine ourselves strolling slowly between trees of cherry blossoms, enjoying the pink petals falling on our hair, the warm sunshine on our faces, and the romance in our hearts. Occasionally, we will see couples immersing themselves in this romantic atmosphere particular to spring. We quietly walk by a pair of loving couples, peering them through the corner of our eyes. We sense the hesitation in their tentative touches, we feel the anxiety and racing heartbeat rippling over their bodies. The inebriating scent of sweet nectar exuding from their blushing pores (is this going too far? well, whatever~) propels us to lift our (stalking) eyes and get a glimpse of these passionately in-love couples (both male, obviously). And for each and every time, before we even lift our heads, we know exactly who they are--Gintoki/Hijikata, Hijikata/Sougo, Yamazaki/Shyogun (??), Kagami/Kuroko, Midorima/Akashi, Yuichirou/Mikaera...... and so on. Welcome to Spring, fellow Fujoshis! Although our imaginations are forever thriving, spring will always be the season when romance (between two men) starts to bloom (in our heads, for most of the time). In order to fuel our imagination (which borders on hallucination), we constantly thirst for the presentation and representation of our favorite characters (and their partners, who might not be the same for everyone, but that's ok, we shall all live in peace). This spring season in anime, let me present to you 6 of the most Yaoi/BL animes, which will turn you on and make your pink spring even pinker, just by watching the opening theme song! Shall we begin?

1. Kuroko no Basket 3rd Season (Kuroko's Basketball 3rd Season)

(continuing from winter)

Kuroko's Basketball
[Information aired="Airing: Jan 11th, 2015 – present"]

Now, although all animes/mangas could have their Yaoi/BL bent, as long as there are more than one male in them, there are particular genres and elements that are most likely to trigger our Yaoi radars: sports, military/war, and idols. Here we start we the young and vibrant, filled with vigor and steam, a sport that will always make our hearts bounce (along with their balls)--basketball. Wet skin glistering with sweat, pressing against each other's soaked clothes that cling to their bare bodies. Rising heat and panting breaths, twisted agony of both pain and pleasure. The urge to subdue and the resistance that entails. The pull and push. The plays and plans. The immense physical consumption and emotional pressure. There is only one other activity in life that could have a similar description (and I'm not telling you if you can't figure that out yourself). There are two kinds of relationships that are specifically Yaoi/BL on a basketball court: rivalries and companions. Rivals compete for the opportunity to subdue one another; companions monitor conditions to support one another. For rivalry pairings, we have the calm and confident but somehow overly superstitious Shintarou Midorima and the calculative and manipulative Seijurou Akashi; the mischievous and devilish Shyougo Haizaki and his great obsession with the restless and unpredictable yet somewhat naive Ryouta Kise. If you like pairings with more antagonism and heat, there is the arrogant Daiki Aomine and the reckless Taiga Kagami (this is not my personal preference, but some of you might be interested). And of course, for companion pairings, who could trump the inseparable couple, who complement each other in all aspects, who work perfectly in sync as light and shadow--our beloved Taiga Kagami and Tetsuya Kuroko (however, in the past seasons, it seems that Kuroko has more competition than we expect). In the third season, Seirin will be facing Rakuzan after defeating Kaijou. However, what we really care about is whether Kagami's heart will stay with Kuroko, and how much longer could Kuroko keep his cool under so much competition (Tatsuya Himuro, Daiki Aomine, etc.). Will Kuroko eventually turn to someone else (Kise? Akashi?)? How will Midorima react if Kuroko comes to Akashi? Will Kagami regret his own indecisiveness which drives Kuroko away? The third season seems excitingly messy to me~~!

2. Gintama°(Gintama 4th Season)

gintama 2015
[Information aired="Airing: April 8th, 2015"]

As we are done with our dose of sports (and the sweat, and the flesh, and the rivalry, and the companionship), we are here for something stronger: military and war. War and battle are the forever great triggers for Yaoi/BL inspiration. The great intent to conquer and subdue; the humility of the defeated and tamed. The force, the violence, the penetrating and slicing of weapons. The great obsession with the enemy which could only be fulfilled by physical combat, fights, and bloodshed. These are all elements indispensable to classic Yaoi plots. When the shedding of blood translates into the shedding of tears (and some other types of body fluids), and the pleasure of conquest translates to the satisfaction of xxx (*self-censorship*), the similarity becomes more salient. And here is how we get some of our beloved and most popular pairings in Gintama. As comedic as it is, war and combat are two of the essential settings in Gintama. Shinsuke Takasugi and his abnormal obsession with violence and destruction is a twisted bond between him and Gintoki Sakata (our light-hearted silver hair main character). As unhealthy as this connection is, we still love to see Shinsuke pinning Gintoki down (hard) (or the other way around, to your preference) with whatever "weapon" he has in his hands. Isao Kondo's relationship with Kotarou Katsura may not be as intense, but still bears an antagonism that resembles more of a "catch-me-if-you-can" type of teasing and play. Toushirou Hijikata and Gintoki's constant rivalry is a cute and less taxing version of the "I-complete-you" sort of relationship (thanks to our beloved couple, Batman and Joker). War is not only about antagonism, but also about strong companionship. For this, in Gintama, we have the legend of Edo, Shinsengumi. Shinsengumi is probably the greatest among all to have us turned on with their strong attachments with comrades. What can possibly be more romantic (well, by romantic I mean fleshy, juicy, and sexy) than a bunch of guys wielding their swords ("sword!!") playfully ("playfully!!") at one another ("ONE ANOTHER!!") as practice and game? For pairings that are more vanilla, we have Gintoki and his fellow employee at Yorozuya, Shinpachi Shimura. Of course, for the whole new third season, we would love to see some more development of the bond between Gintoki and Shinpachi, or the tightening relationships among members of Shinsengumi--Hijikata/Okita Sougo, (Whoever)/Sagaru Yamazaki, and so on. Among the feast of man in Gintama, which pairing(s) do you prefer?

3. Seraph of the End (Jpn: Owari no Seraph)

owari no seraph
[Information aired="Airing: Apr 4, 2015 to Jun 20, 2015"]

Another story of military, battle, war, comrades, and enemies. "Seraph of the end" is a Japanese light-novel series, which is adapted into manga (with pretty different perspectives and plottings), and now comes to television. This story has most of the elements for a standard Japanese light-novel fantasy--high school settings, apocalypse, military involvement, and, most important of all, vampires. Vampires are the epitome of Yaoi/BL. The great origin is of course Louis and Lestat from "Interview with the Vampire." Fangs piercing through skin and flesh to quench the restless blood lust can never be depicted with innocence. The main protagonist of the manga series are a pair of boys, Yuuichirou Hyakuya and Mikaela Hyakuya (and of course this is our main pairing). The two were orphans of the Hyakuya Orphanage and became captives of the vampire army which took over human civilization after the epidemic of an artificial virus that wiped out 90% of the human population. They found an opportunity to escape from the vampire rule as Mikaela stole the map and a gun from one the vampire nobles. However, the vampire noble, Ferid Bathory, kills every one of the members of Hyakuya Orphanage, leaving Mikaela half dead. Only Yuuichirou managed to escape. And here begins Yuuichirou's battle. The world view of the story is more complex than what seemed at first sight. However what we care about is the relationship between Yuuichirou and Mikaela. Will they meet again and how will they meet? Will they be comrades or enemies, or something in between? In addition, we also have the tender and timid, yet strong Yoichi Saotome from Yuuichirou's high school (after all, teenagers do have to go to school), who might be a competition for Mikaela for Yuuichirou's love. There is also the calculative and possessive Lieutenant Colonel of the Japanese Imperial Demon Army, Guren Ichinose, who believes that Yuuichirou is his (and his alone). Besides of vampires, the army uniforms are a major treat to the story's Yaoi/BL inspiration (how can you not love uniforms?! They're good both tidy and unkempt). With all elements in place, and an impressive casting of voice performers, we just can't wait to see the characters move, talk, and do whatever they want in color on screen!

4. Uta no☆Prince-sama♪: Maji Love Revolutions

uta no prince-sama maji love revolutions
[Information aired="Airing: April 5th, 2015"]

After all the blood and sweat in war, we're turning to something less intense and more comforting--idols. This is the third season of this sparkling idol anime. Adapted from a Japanese gal-game, the series is destined to be pleasant. The story revolves around a song writer girl, Haruka Nanami, and her seven (faithful) male admirers--Tokiya Ichinose, Otoya Ittoki, Masato Hijirikawa, Natsuki Shinomiya, Ren Jinguji, Shou Kurusu, and Cecil Aijima. And of course, the relationship between the female protagonist and the boys is never the point. What we long to see is the "healthy" competition among peers and the "unadulterated" admiration for seniors. When will Ren discover his fixation on Masato is actually that of deep love and adoration, and when will Masato confess his true feelings to Ren? How will Shou's admiration for Ai Mikaze become and how torn will Ryuya Hyuga be when he finds out? And who will eventually fall in love with our cute and sexy Otome (male-girl), Ringo Tsukimiya? The real story line of this anime has never involved Haruka. If you are able to grasp the connotations and not-too-subtle implications in the interactions among the seven guys (why does "seven" sounds so familiar?), you will have a greater time enjoying this anime than you could possibly imagine!

5. Kyoukai no Rinne (Eng:Circle of Reincarnation)

Kyoukai no Rinne
[Information aired="April 4th, 2015"]

Rumiko Takahashi is probably one of the rare manga artists who are still actively producing new works that are truly entertaining and fun consecutively from the 80's. Her works are known for their comedic elements (excluding the early pieces), with unique settings and surprising turns in plot and narratives. And of course, filled with Yaoi/BL imagination (just think about Ranma and Inu Yasha). Rinne is half-human half-shinigami (the Death Angel) and works as a Shinigami to put wandering souls on Earth back onto the turning wheel of reincarnation. He becomes classmates with Sakura Mamiya, a girl who could see ghosts, which is where the story begins. However, as all our recommendations on this list, we have little interest in the heroines of the stories. So, let us turn our attentions to the guys. The first pairing that comes to mind is Rinne and his elementary school classmate, Matsugo. Matsugo's obsession with Rinne is definitely that beyond normal friendship. We are not yet sure who's going to top who (I'll vote for Matsugo's perseverance), but we would love to see one of them finally landing on the other. Naive submissiveness is also nice to see. Rinne's contract partner black cat, Rokumon, is also a good fit for Rinne (there might be some underage issues here, though...... well, Rinne himself is underage, so this might not be a problem~). And if you like happy antagonism, Masato/Rinne is your best choice (the relationships in this anime is so complicated...)!

6. Ame-iro Cocoa (Rainy Cocoa)

Ameiro Cocoa
[Information aired="Airing: April 5th, 2015"]

All the recommendations above are Yaoi animes that are not meant to be Yaoi (well, at least they didn't say it out loud). For the last recommendation, we have here a standard BL anime. "Rainy Cocoa" is set in one of the classic arrangements of Yaoi/BL stories: a coffee shop with good looking guys. There is the cute and clumsy protagonist, Aoi Tokura; the lukewarm and reticent handsome art school student, Keiichi Iwase; the perky Ryouta Sakuragi; the kind and beautiful manager, Shion Koga; and the random and free owner of the Cafe, Rainy Cocoa, Kouji Amami. This deliberate selection of different types of men is a must. We can't help but wonder, who will Aoi fall for? The seemingly cold hearted Keiichi? Or the sunshine Ryouta? He would definitely be attracted to Shion's tenderness and beauty, but Shion seems to be like the type who conceals their true feelings under sweet smiles? How about the owner? Will Aoi be with the owner? Or is the owner already a captive of Shion's beauty? There is only so much we can know by reading the introduction. The rest is in the anime~!

Hibike! Euphonium

The Spring 2015 anime season has finally begun. And with it, comes a show that’s entertaining and heart-warming like no other. Spring is the season to start the new school year in Japan and this is where the story of Sound! Euphonium starts. It tells the story of Kumiko and her experiences made while joining a brass band in her freshman year of high school. Sounds boring you say? Trust me, Sound! Euphonium is a hidden gem of this season and worth trying out. We have composed a list of six shows that fans of Sound! Euphonium can enjoy while waiting for the next episodes to air. Enjoy!

uta-no-prince-sama-DVD
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" July 2011 - September 2011 "]

Let me start off with a show that contains lots of music and lots of love. Uta no Prince-sama is a Reverse Harem anime that shows the daily life of Haruka who enrolls in the famous Saotome Academy. Her dream is to become a musical composer and together with a group of future idols she gives her best to make it come true. You might enjoy this show if you're not too much into classical instruments but more into pop music. Uta no Prince-sama features numerous different songs throughout the show. Besides, the design of the main characters is lovely and really memorable. The show got popular enough to get several sequels so check it out if you want to understand what the hype is all about.

2. Nodame Cantabile

Nodame Cantabile DVD
[Information episodes=" 23 " aired=" January 2007 - June 2007 "]

Nodame Cantabile is an anime legend that you need to see regardless of whether you like Sound! Euphonium or not. Unlike most other shows on this list Nodame Cantabile is set in a University and not a high school, so this show is more relatable for older viewers. Like in Sound! Euphonium, the focus lies on music and how it affects and unites musicians. A must-watch for people who can appreciate classical music. If you enjoyed this show you might consider watching its Japanese drama adaption as well.

3. K-On!

K-ON!
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" April 2009 - June 2009 "]

K-On!’s plot is very similar to the one of Sound! Euphonium. Here we see Hirasawa Yui’s daily life as a first year student in high school. She soon decides to join a music club, despite having one big problem - she has yet to make any musical experience. The viewers follow her on her journey as she struggles to give her best and to find her place in high school. Some people were actually afraid that Sound! Euphonium would be just another K-On!, but I have to say that they each have their own charm. Also, while Sound! Euphonium features more classical instruments, K-On!’s music has a more rock and pop vibe to it. Still, both shows have outstanding character design and a lot of different girls that will move you with their stories.

Jumping from first year of high school to its last year, next up we have Tari Tari. It’s a show featuring a group of friends that think about the memories of their past and the chances lying in their future. Together they form a choir to create something memorable in their last year together. Tari Tari is a great Slice of Life show that shows the struggle of teenagers trying to grow up. They all have troublesome pasts but also dreams for their future and try to come together and help each other out. [Information episodes=" 22 " aired=" April 2012 - September 2012 "]

Next up is the only show on this list that doesn’t feature music. Yet, I think it is the anime that resembles Sound! Euphonium the most. Protagonist is high school boy Oreki Houtarou who just recently joined the Classical Literature Club of his school. He did so reluctantly, not expecting to gain much out of this experience. But as it goes in most anime, he realizes that meeting new people and finding friends can be enjoyable and that his high school life can be different from how it was up until now. It reminds me so much of Sound! Euphonium because it tries to invent interesting characters and shows how they can work together despite being so different. Creating a Club environment where everyone has to interact and cooperate is always a good idea in my eyes. Overall it’s a good show and you will definitely like it if you enjoy Sound! Euphonium.

6. Shigatsu wa Kimi No Uso (Your Lie in April)

[Information episodes="22 " aired=" October 2014 - March 2015 "]

Do you want a show that’s heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time? Then you might consider giving Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso a try. It shows the tragic life of former child prodigy Arima Kosei. After losing his mother and having a mental breakdown he’s unable to hear the sound of his piano. He decides to leave the world of music and remain in his sad and dull new life. It’s not until the outgoing and dynamic violinist Miyazono Kaori steps into his life that he’s able to change his outlook on the future. Not only is the musical part of this show gorgeous, but it also has a lot of romance and drama. The two protagonists are still fairly young but the show teaches you how to stay optimistic in a hopeless situation and how passion can keep people going. Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso is a show that convinced many viewers that classical music can actually be entertaining. Why not give it a try?

Hibike! Euphonium Preview / Plot (No Spoilers)

Hibike! Euphonium is the story of the Concert Band club at Kitauji high school. The band is taking in a new crop of Freshman including our main character, Kumiko Oumae and are getting prepared for the year ahead. The presence of a new advisor, Noboru Taki who gives the band a choice between just playing for fun, or for the goal of competing at the national level, the band chooses the latter. However, the choice may not have been made completely in earnest, and the band members may not have realized exactly what they’ve gotten themselves into.

Hibike Euphonium wallpaper

Who does Hibike! Euphonium cater to?

If you’ve enjoyed a Kyoani show prior or enjoy the slice of life/high school dram genre at all then Hibike! Euphonium is easy to recommend. If you’re also a fan of music shows, this is something you should definitely tune in to. I think overall, Hibike! Euphonium is a character-driven drama that’s built around examining characters experiences to the club and relating their experiences with others in their friendships and also, conflicts.

What's so appealing about this piece of work.

I stated before that this show is a character drama, and therein lies the shows biggest asset. It’s able to present different types of personalities, attitudes as well as backstories and life experience around the central driving force of the narrative, the music club. We have characters that are well-thought out and distinct from one another, that feels fresh and don’t rely on too many tropes or overused clichés. This show is about how people come and work together to achieve something, be it trying to reach a lofty goal or trying to merely have a good time. So far, it’s apparent that this show is trying to deal with the way groups of people manage decision making in a group, and manage different aspirations and desires of the membership.

Hibike! Euphonium Main Characters List

Kumiko Oumae

hibike euphonium Kumiko

Voice Actor :Tomoyo Kurosawa

Kumiko is the main character of the series, and she attends Kitauji high school because she wanted a fresh start. She went in with the intent not to do band again, and even when she goes back into band, she tries to start another instrument. In the end, she takes up the Euphonium again, which gives the series its name. Kumiko might want to grow up a little faster than she is right now, but also seems to be very preoccupied with the past. She seems to have a troubled and complicated relationship with her sister as well as Reina Kousaka, another main character with whom Kumiko went to middle school with. Kumiko feels especially uneasy over one particular comment she made which she thinks (and seemingly did) hurt Reina’s feelings. Still, Kumiko is a big help to the band, a skilled musician and a good example for those totally new to playing music to follow.

Reina Kousaka

hibike euphonium Reina

Voice Actor :Chika Anzai

If Kumiko wanted (or thought she wanted) nothing to do with music, it seems Reina is the polar opposite. An excellent trumpet player, Reina receives private lessons in addition to working diligently in the school band. Why she went to Kitauji remains somewhat of a mystery, as they weren’t known at all for their music club. She’s the strong yet silent type, and is willing to confront people if something she cares about is at stake. Behind the silent personality, is a deep well of emotion and like Kumiko there’s a lot to her that we don’t know at first.

Hibike! Euphonium Review

Hibike! Euphonium has both broad appeal and significant niche appeal. If you have even a moderate interest in the high school or slice of life genre, I can easily recommend this show. As for the Niche, if you have been a member of a concert band, this is a show you want to pick up immediately. For the uninitiated, concert bands are essentially orchestras without string instrumentations, although some have a double bass. Concert Bands also typically have saxophones, which traditional orchestras rarely do. This gives it a unique and distinguished sound that’s easy to remember if you’ve been in a concert band, and that sound is showcased in Hibike! Euphonium. It’s impossible for me to sit through and episode and not miss the days I spent in band in my High school years. From ensembles, to sectional practices, to lugging your instrument home, the show can throw you into a pool of nostalgia if you’ve had the experience. At the same time, it’s not so steeped in music itself to be a drag for those who don’t have much an interest in it. There are no long discussions of music terminology or theory, and when they do need to go in depth, it does a good job of giving you proper exposition so you know what’s going on. Hibike! Euphonium’s main strength is not the artistry performed by the main characters but the artistry that’s gone into the show itself. If there’s one scene that solidified this as the current anime of the season front runner, it’s Reina playing Antonin Dvorak on the hill overlooking the school.

sound euphonium wallpaper 02

This is a good example of what I mean by the artistry that is going behind this series. Reina is either deeply passionate about music or just compelled to work very hard at being the best musician she can be. However, most of her classmates are anything but, and even though they agreed to go for national level competition, many of them did so just for show and are more interested in just having fun. The band’s lack of effort and practice time causes friction between them and their conductor/club advisor. Reina, at the end of school, goes on the hill and plays the famous ‘Going Home’ melody just as well as anybody could, and lets out a belting, frustrated scream. It’s a beautiful moment, and the music behind it is significant. The piece of music she’s playing was composed while Dvorak, a Czech composer, was traveling abroad in the United States. The piece was inspired by numerous American folk songs, so to Dvorak, they were foreign songs sung about longing for your home, while he was a way, longing for his. Again, it remains to be seen why Reina chose an school with a weak band program, but this grand gesture powerfully displays that she’s feeling alone, isolated, and away from where she wants to be. There’s a line between shows with keep details hidden, sometimes it can be overly cryptic and obtuse, and other times it’s intriguing and drives you to want to know more. Hibike! Euphonium lies squarely in the latter. This show is all about its character drama. At first appearance a ‘cute girls don’t cute things show’ the relationships we see develop really makes the experience feel grounded and real. We won’t know for sure until the series ends, but this feels like a show that will take you step by careful step to reveal just what makes these character tick emotionally, and the wealth of strong, emotional dialogue leads me to believe this show is worth a rewatch or two. Probably the most unique thing about Hibike! Euphonium is its focus on showing a group, with many different types of people who each have their own desires, interests and goals coming together to make decisions for the whole, and what are the effect of those decisions on the group and it’s members. If you’ve been active in high school or college clubs, this show will definitely make you recall that experience. The Kitauji band feels like a living, breathing club which in many ways seems to be flimsy foundations.

sound euphonium wallpaper 01

The last episode, which went into detail about why many of its members quit last year, because they wanted to take a serious approach over the lax one the majority wanted. People want different things out of the club, and not all of them are going to be satisfied. Helming the ship is the seemingly embattled Haruka Ogasawara, club president. Haruka’s somewhat demure temperament is maybe not what she and others feels a president needs, and this causes her to rely on Asuka Tanaka, her strong willed Vice President, to rally together many of the bands members. Haruka relies on Asuka, but also somewhat resents both her ability and popularity especially when she could make such use of it for the good of the band. Emotional nuance like this, especially in the context of having to play in and manage this group club is the meat and potatoes of Hibike! Euphonium. It would have been much easier to develop, and much less enjoyable to watch, a show where people play music because they love music and the only times they’re in emotional duress is when they’re not playing. But this show is much more ambitious than that and wants to paint a portrait of how people relate to each other and have to come together and make decisions as a group amongst dissenting opinions and disparate personalities. There’s a lot yet to unfold, and much more to be seen but Hibike! Euphonium compels me to give it an early seal of approval. It’s nifty, well-crafted in every sense from its emphasis on the personal experiences and motivations of individuals, to its ability to frame shots and visually give insight into how a character feels or what two peoples relationship might be at in that moment. It’s also a damn nice show to look at, with strong and easy to recognize character designs (Helpful in a show with a cast this big) with generally strong animation and also excellent backgrounds and overall detail.

1. The Band as a Whole

hibike euphonium The band as a whole

Kitauji feels as real as many of the groups and organizations people join in high school or college. If you’ve come together with people who share a passion or a belief and wanted to pursue it, forming a group isn’t all rainbows and sunshine. There’s a lot of work and politics that go into it, sometimes this can drag it down, other times it can sustain what’s good about it and why it was formed in the first place. I’m looking forward to see where the band ends up, and I hope it will be a place that all of its members can take away something from.

2. The Performances

hibike euphonium the performances

Using music to display a group of people who are reaching out of their comfort zone to devote themselves to getting better at something, the show uses the performances of the band to a great effect. From hearing a piece that first sounds muddled, messy and out of sync transform into something that’s played with passion, preparation and attention to detail is not something you need to be a music theorist to hear. A show about music needs to take care in the music that’s played, and Hibike! Euphonium hasn’t pulled punches yet in this regard.

3. The Different Sections

One of the things you’ll notice Is that each of the sections have a sort of distinct personality to them. The trumpets are flashy and can be a little brash. The low brass are understated, almost dull. The kids in the percussion joined because they wanted to hit stuff with sticks. It’s often talked about how each instrument often has a specific type of personality that’s attracted to it and Hibike! Euphonium does this in subtle ways that are always fun to catch.

There’s a lot to like about Hibike! Euphonium. It’s a show with a lot of attention to detail, fleshing out it’s characters, making it’s drama seem real and not totally ridiculous, and having strong visual story telling. I look forward to new episodes for this show more than any other in the Spring 2015 lineup. If you don’t want to miss out on what might be the best anime of this season, don’t sleep on Hibike! Euphonium.
