shigatsu wa kimi no uso dvd

Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso was hands down, one of the brightest anime of its season! The animation was spectacular while the musical compositions were masterfully done. Coming in as a musical romance drama with extremely bright, colorful animation, you would almost be fooled to think it’s smiles all around, but this series will definitely leave you with butterflies in your stomach after each and every episode. Arima Kousei meets a blonde haired girl named Kaori Miyazono and is instantly entranced. He’s a prodigy, he suffered a great trauma and can no longer bring himself to play the piano. But, after meeting Kaori, things started to change. She’s innovation while he’s perfection. Namely, she’s the spring to his winter. While this series is beautifully mastered and hard to compete, there are series that deliver certain feelings with a musically inclined theme.

1. Nodame Cantabile

Nodame Cantabile DVD
[Information episodes=" 23 " aired=" January 2007-June 2007 "]

If anything is like Shigatsu, hands down it’s Nodame Cantabile. The maturity and the passion alone parallels well and the sweet romance is the icing on the cake. It’s as appearingly light and fluffy as Shigatsu with every deep moment as it has as well. One huge similarity is Chiaki and Kousei, both perfectionist players who meet a girl who sweeps them off their feet. We watch as the two find their way in the world of music. Nodame Cantabile is a musical classic and one every fan of music anime should watch.

2. Full Moon wo Sagashite (Searching for the Full Moon)

Full Moon o Sagashite
[Information episodes=" 52 " aired=" April 2002 - March 2003 "]

Coming in with 52 episodes is none other than Full Moon, which was a big hit and for a lot people, what came after Sailor Moon when you found out as kids that it was from Japan! Arina Tanemura, the original manga artist, has spawned many successes. This is a story about a young girl with beautiful voice, silenced by a malignant tumor. Enter in two shinigami who tell her she has a year to live but she plans to make the most of it. I think Full Moon really captures the essence of Shigatsu because of the underlying deep drama dealing with the main blonde girl, despite that, they remain cheerful through it all. Both are passionate about music and use it to reach people’s hearts.

3. Kinniro no Corda: Primo Passo (La Corda d’Oro: Primo Passo)

kinniro no corda dvd
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" October 2006 - March 2007 "]

Hino Kahoko, after encountering a music fairy, is the only normal student to enter into the Music Branch’s music competition and, with no prior knowledge, starts playing the a magical violin that only plays if she truly believes in herself and the music. Despite the magic elements in this series, like Shigatsu it is very slice of life. There’s relationships, romance, friendships and musical competitions galore. With music competitions comes the drama and fear along with it. Will I win? Or will I play my music to my hearts content and not let fear of losing control me?

4. Hibike! Euphonium (Sound! Euphonium)

Hibike! Euphonium
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired="April 2015 - July 2015 "]

Hibike may be the closest to rivaling the wonderful animation of Shigatsu and adorable characters. The premise is about Kumiko who doesn’t want anything to do with the brass band but somehow gets pulled in anyway and runs into a girl she accidently insulted in junior high. Hibike shares numerous themes with Shigatsu, including drama/romance/comedy but also ties in music hand in hand with relationships and life. KyoAni’s animation work did it justice as well, from the fingering of the instruments to the characterized, realistic expressions. Both series really pull you into the setting and make you believe these characters are real.

5. White Album

White Album
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" January 2009 - March 2009 "]

Fujii Touya is living the dream, dating a oncoming idol named Morikawa Yuki. Of course, there’s many challenges in the idol world, causing plenty of drama at school and work. The best part of this series is the realistic, flawed characters who go about life making decisions that, well, a lot of us might make because we are all only human after all. The intensity in this series is so very similar to Shigatsu, where it may be lacking in colorful joy, it makes up for with a fairly engaging storyline. I think it’s also similar because both series probes similar questions; “what would you do in this situation?”

6. Piano

piano dvd
[Information episodes=" 10 " aired=" November 2002 - January 2003 "]

Piano is a touching slice of life that might also be just too close to real life. Dealing with the realities of teenage life and piano playing, it’s relatively slower in pace just like Shigatsu. If you like classical music, you’ll find it in here as well. When Miu was young, she was entranced by the piano and started taking up lessons. Eventually she gets good but is so soft spoken and unconfident, she can’t put her heart into her music. She falls for a boy too, and like Kousei in Shigatsu, it has it’s slower pace.

Piano OP

I promise, above all else, if you marathon these series you will probably be motivated to do what you love as well. The beauty of the music theme tends to be the sheer passion the characters have for their craft. In all these series, regardless of art style, plot, etc., you will see all the pure devotion everyone gives to music; it consumes them, and us. Is there any series you wish was on here? 6 Anime Like NANA [Recommendations]

[ad_top1 class="mb40"]
nana dvd

NANA revolves around the lives of two girls who share the same first name: Nana. Komatsu Nana is an eccentric girl who has this nasty habit of falling in love with every cool guy she sees. On her way to Tokyo, she meets the punk rock vocalist Osaki Nana and in a bizarre twist of fate, these two girls ended up living together and not only they share the same name and apartment, they're both looking for a meaning of their lives.

One can easily classify NANA as Slice of Life, like, you know, shows about a normal-looking guy getting all the girls for some reason, or girls going about their club activities at school while not doing actual club work at all – I'm looking at you, K-ON! — Wait, I love K-ON!, so please put down those pitchforks! *ahem* NANA is one of the best examples of mature Slice of Life stories that don’t rely on the typical high school romantic harem comedy show with panty shots every 5 seconds formula and doesn’t spend half of the episode discussing how to eat food (that’s a thing).

NANA is all about the relatable characters (oddly enough, 90% of them are heavy smokers), how they deal with their love lives, and/or how they struggle as flawed human beings. With these themes in mind, here are six similar Slice of Life anime with just as mature stories to tell.

1. Kimi ga Nozomu Eien (Rumbling Hearts)

Kimi ga Nozomu Eien Rumbling Hearts dvd
[Information episodes=" 14 " aired=" October 2003 - January 2004 "]

Adapted from a visual novel, Kimi ga Nozomu Eien (KimiNozo for short) tells the story of four best friends: Narumi Takayuki, Hayase Mitsuki, Suzumiya Haruka, and Taira Shinji. Friendship grew to love however and after a shocking incident that befell the group, their lives changed throughout the years. KimiNozo is a story of love, friendship, betrayal and shows how love can easily sway one's heart.

Right off the bat, the first thing that makes KimiNozo similar to NANA is the rather complicated relationships of the characters. Komatsu Nana has a few guys in her life — the married man, the college sweetheart, and the rockstar. Was the college sweetheart cheating on her or was it just a misunderstanding and her blowing things out of proportion? Will she continue rejecting him and move on with the other guy she met?

These are tough decisions for one girl to make. Same goes with the characters of KimiNozo — Will Takayuki continue loving Mitsuki after years of being together or will he abandon her because he made a promise to Haruka back when they were young? Will Mitsuki give up because Haruka is her best friend or fight in the name of love? Ugh, that last line was cheesy…

2. NHK ni Youkoso! (Welcome to the NHK)

Welcome to the NHK
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" July 2006 - December 2006 "]

After dropping out of college, 22-year-old Tatsuhiro Satou is living his life as a shut-in. He is lazy, rarely leaves his room, sleeps 16 hours a day and spends the rest of the day getting annoyed by his loud neighbor. He didn’t ask for this lifestyle and then discovers that a mysterious group called the NHK is the reason why he became a hikikimori.

But then one day, he met a young girl named Nakahara Misaki and his life starts changing for the better... or does it? Is this young girl his saving grace or is she a secret agent of the NHK out to keep his life a living hell? Welcome to the NHK.

Welcome to the NHK doesn’t focus on romance like NANA or KimiNozo, but it does share the portrayal of relatable human interaction and how fragile it is. Satou is a good example of a real shut-in living his life in seclusion. His life is miserable and he is in no way a superhero nor does he have magical powers like you see in anime.

He’s just a normal guy who had lost his way and blames an organization he didn’t even know existed for his shortcomings. He will not meet a love interest with magical powers nor does he have friends to cheer him up. The people he meets are the same as him — sociopaths struggling with their lives.

Depressing list, don’t you think? Not to worry, the next one will bring a smile to your face!

3. Kimi ni Todoke (From Me to You, Reaching You)

kiminitodoke
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" October 2009 - March 2010 "]

Kimi ni Todoke is a shoujo anime with a similar art style as NANA (piercing eyes, guys with shoulders wider than a chalkboard, etc.). That’s it. Now on to the fourth anim—Right, right.

Kimi ni Todoke tells the story of Sawako Kuronuma who longs to make new friends in high school. But because of her resemblance to the ghost from the “The Ring”, and because people often mistake her timid demeanor for maliciousness, she has earned the nickname “Sadako.”

Enter Kazehaya Shouta, the kind and popular guy in class. He is Sadako’s inspiration to try harder to make friends. Sawako’s school life slowly changes as she and Shouta become friends and like every romance story out there, love starts from that friendship.

The story is lighthearted, very funny, yet heart-warming. The character development and the relationships are the anime’s strongest point. Yeah, the character development is sorta less complex and often predictable, but the characters are so colorful and very relatable. Especially Ume-chan. I can relate to her in many ways and I like her so much I often cheered for her, the “bad guy,” more than Sawako. Don’t misunderstand me, Sawako is a great female lead, but I just can’t ignore Kurumizawa Ume’s charm. Go, go, Ume-chan!

4. Hachimitsu to Clover (Honey and Clover)

Hachimitsu-to-clover-DVD
[Information episodes=" 24 " aired=" April 2005-September 2005 "]

Honey and Clover tells the story of art students Takemoto Yuuta, Mayama Takumi, Morita Shinobu, Yamada Ayumi, and Hanamoto Hagumi as they go about their colorful and often chaotic lives.

This is the liveliest anime on the list. Don’t be fooled by Shinobu’s crazy antics and funny reactions, like every show on this list, Honey and Clover is filled with relatable characters and stories. Whether it’s Yuuta finding love for the first time, Takumi doing his best to finish college while dealing with is love life, Ayumi struggling with her unrequited love, or Hagumi dealing with rejection and slowly earning friends, it’s a ride you’ll be glad to go on. And despite being the oddest oddball of the bunch, Shinobu is always there to provide comedic and moral support to his friends. Dammit, Morita-san!

5. Toradora!

Toradora ichiban
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" October 2008-March 2009 "]

Takasu Ryuuji is a nice guy, but due to his intimidating eyes, people only see him as a delinquent and so he’s totally hopeless about his chances at making friends, never mind getting a girlfriend. On his first day as a second-year highschool student, he is happy to be in the same class with his best pal Kitamura Yuusaku and his crush Kushieda Minori. However, he unwittingly bumps into Aisaka Taiga, the school’s “most dangerous animal.”

Despite having the seemingly typical cast of stereotypes in an average high school romance setting, Toradora! ends up telling a mature story with characters that are not who they seem. Much like everything on this list, Toradora! is chockful of great characters, love triangles, friendships and break-ups – even more so than NANA.

If you ask me, Kawashima Ami is my favorite character in the show. At first, she’s this egotistic supermodel and as the show goes on, her perspective and attitude changes after meeting with the other cast like Taiga, Ryuuji and especially Minori. If you watched Toradora! when it aired in 2008-2009, I’m sure you know the nickname fans gave her — Ami-bro.

6. Full Moon wo Sagashite (Searching for a Full Moon)

full moon wo sagashite dvd
[Information episodes=" 52 " aired=" April 2002-March 2003 "]

12-year-old Kouyama Mitsuki has big dreams of becoming a singer. One day, she made a promise with a boy named Eiichi that one day, when they meet again, they will have both fulfilled their dreams. Unfortunately for Mitsuki, she is diagnosed with a growth on her throat and if left untreated, the tumor will take her life. However, she refuses to be treated because in doing so, she will forever lose her ability to sing and fulfill her promise to the boy.

As her last days pass by, she is visited by two soul takers (shinigami), Takuto and Meroko to prepare for her departure to the afterlife. Refusing to give up, Mitsuki shows her resolve and passion to sing and convinced Takuto to help her. With his powers, and with some reluctant support from Meroko, they push Mitsuki to pursue her dreams by giving her a temporarily healthy body. Will Mitsuki fulfill her dream as a singer and meet Eiichi or will she fail and succumb to her illness?

Don't be fooled by the kiddy nature of the art style and mahou shoujo-esque idol story because Full Moon wo Sagashite is a story about growing up, self discovery and fighting against all odds so you can reach your dream. Full Moon is very similar to NANA in many ways — the main character is a singer pursuing her career and tries to catch up to the person she holds dear.

Mitsuki meets friends and rivals along the way and she has to deal with a shaky love triangle between her and the shinigami pair, Takuto and Meroko. And of course, there's the music. While the track list is small compared to other idol anime, it compensates by how powerful each song is. Sung by MYCO with music by Changin' My Life, each song has a purpose, a meaning in terms of the story and Mitsuki herself.

There you have it, folks, six anime that're thematically very similar to NANA. Yeah, I know I didn't include the obvious choice, Paradise Kiss (created by Yazawa Ai who also create NANA), but this was because I wanted each entry on the list to be a different experience, with similar themes. I feel that anime sharing the same creator doesn’t totally achieve that. I hope this list has piqued your interest in checking out the anime shown above, and please do bring a lot of tissues, you're gonna need them.

Today we have a special selection of Anime with a certain particularity that could be (and should be in my opinion) an Anime genre in itself. I’m talking about kawaii (cute) Anime. Usually, these type of shows are labeled as 'shoujo' and 'slice of life', but certainly not all 'shoujo' and 'slice of life' Anime are kawaii (and vice versa). For that reason, I believe kawaii should be considered an official genre to subdivide these shows that are increasingly popular. In the meantime, I will try and help those who are desperately searching for new and charming kawaii Anime (especially after the recent kawaii success, Umaru-chan). For those people who simply can’t get enough adorableness I present you my Top 10 Kawaii Anime!

10. Mikakunin de Shinkoukei / Engaged to the Unidentified

mikakunin de shinkoukei dvd

Mikakunin de Shinkoukei tells the story of sixteen-year-old Kobeni Yonomori, an average high school girl who has just learned she’s engaged to Hakuya Mitsumine, a boy of her age. Hakuya and his little sister, Mashiro, end up moving in with Kobeni and her older sister. All four of them will have to learn how to get along in this unusual and awkward situation. The show is inherently kawaii. All of the girls are really playful and everything they do is either silly or extremely sweet. Mashiro steals the show; she’s a great character and the smartest 9-year old you’ll ever meet. Everything about this show is just plain nice.

8. Usagi Drop / Bunny Drop

[Information episodes=" 11 " aired=" Jul 2011 – Sep 2011 "]

Bunny Drop is a far more touching Anime than any other on this list. It’s not the typical kind of silly, playing around, kawaii Anime but it’s still cute and charming as hell. This is the story of a thirty year old single man named Daikichi Kawachi, who, at his grandfather’s funeral, learns of the existence of an illegitimate child his grandfather had. Knowing his family’s cruel intentions of giving her to an orphanage, Daikichi decides to take this six year old girl named Rin in adoption. Rin is a gorgeous little girl (similar in looks to Umaru-chan) who will captivate you and win over your heart. She’s a doll, helping poor Daikichi to be a good father. And Daikichi himself does not fall behind. He proves to have a golden heart, as he learns from scratch how to be a paternal figure and a positive influence on Rin’s life.

Probably the most popular show on this list, K-On is a successful comedy and slice of life show about four girls who play on the high school pop music band. Yui is the main character and the lead guitar in the band. She enters the music club thinking it will be a walk in the park, but far from being so she has to learn how to play guitar from zero. If you’re into Kawaii Anime chances are you have at least heard about K-On if you haven’t seen it already. It’s definitely a good choice for all kawaii addicts since it has pretty much everything you’re looking for in a cute show. The girls are joyful and playful. Yui is extremely talented but she’s also silly and every time she learns something she also forgets something. Also, the music they play is so full of life and uplifting that it’s impossible not to smile!

5. Cardcaptor Sakura

Cardcaptor Sakura is my personal favorite among the many Sailor Moon rip offs. It is also the best in my opinion and by far the cutest. From the very opening and the soundtrack to the characters and Sakura’s flashy costume, everything on this show screams Kawaii! And don’t even get me started on Kero. He’s the most huggable little flying mouse thingy ever! The show is about Sakura, an average nice and popular high school girl who accidentally releases a set of magical cards known as Clow Cards. Sakura is then assigned to gather the cards with her newly acquired powers and the help of her guardian Kero, fighting the personification of each magical card.

[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jul 2005 – Oct 2005 "]

The title of this show pretty much sums up all the kawaiiness (yup, I just made up a new word) in this show. It’s about four little girls, Chika, Miu, Matsuri and Coppola, and a young girl who acts as their older sister, Nobue. Together they go through a series of funny and silly adventures that quite often turn a little too bizarre and uncommon. The illustrations are straightforward cute and so are the main characters. Each one of the girls is special and funny in their own way. The older one, Nobue is a nicotine addict, while Chika is rather serious and uptight. Miu is the annoying one, Matsuri the shy one and Anna Coppola is the fashion girl in the group. So we definitely have all sorts of cuteness for everyone to choose from.

All four of them go through the funniest situations on a regular basis. Lucky Star is one of the funniest shows on this list, and one of the cutest too. Merely judging from the characters looks, you’ll get right away just how much kawaii this show is. 2. Himouto! Umaru-chan / My Two-Faced Little Sister

Himouto! Umaru-chan dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" Jul 2015 – Sep 2015 "]

Eat, sleep, game, repeat! That’s all Umaru Doma does every day after school. As a student, she’s perfect, bright, popular and refined. What nobody knows is that she’s quite the opposite at home. After school, she puts on her hamster hoodie cloak and turns into a little spoiled and lazy brat. She does little at home other than eating potato chips, drinking soda and playing video games. Of course, when she’s not doing any of these things, then she’s probably bothering her brother and throwing a tantrum so that he goes out to buy her the new manga volume. That’s pretty much what the show’s about. It’s quite simple and straightforward cute. You’ll just fall in love with Umaru-chan and her playful view of things. This is the funniest kawaii anime I’ve ever seen and my personal favorite on this list. So go ahead and give it a try if you haven’t already.

Ayangai Academy is a school that focuses on music, but it has a musical department that is difficult to enter. You have to be accepted into the Star Frame Class, which is taught by the top students of the musical department, also called the Kaou-kai. This is a story that follows Hoshitani Yuuta, Nayuki Tooru, Tsukigami Kaito, Tengenji Kakeru, and Kuga Shuu who have been selected by the Kaou-kai's Ootori Itsuki. In order to achieve their dream, they have to work together, but can they get along enough to do that? Dance with Devils has a musical aspect of it when the characters do break off into song and dance, so a great anime this season with the same features would be High School Star Musical. High School Star Musical has singing, dancing, and bishounen, but it also takes a look at the bond between these five select students as they learn to work together to become the best. Think of it as an anime similar to Dance with Devils without any girls to take up the screen time of your favorite guys.

Kamigami no Asobi takes a look at a different side of the supernatural with gods instead of demons. The protagonist is another important human amongst a harem of very extraordinary bishounen. Kamigami no Asobi is also set in a school setting, much like Dance with Devils. You'll enjoy watching as you learn that although these gods have no care for humans, they are actually quite human inside.

High School Star Musical dvd

High school star musical DVD

High School Star Musical, known fondly as Star-Myu by devotees, is a musical anime set at the prestigious and competitive Ayanagi Academy music school, famous for its (you guessed it!) music programs. In order for Yuuta Hoshitani to achieve his future dreams of stardom, he and his friends (an awkward inductee, a kabuki wunderkind, and the younger brother of a famous musician) must impress the members of the Kao Council, the cream of the crop of third year students in charge of ensuring the legacy of their Star Team. Dismissed at first for their lack of ability and their personal foibles, when they catch the eye of one of the council members, their dreams have a chance at realization with a lot of hard work and dedication. Star-Mu is a character-driven high school anime with an emphasis on light-heartedness and musical numbers. Although the first season is still mid-swing, viewers learn more about the ensemble cast and the ins and outs of club-life at Ayanagi as the series progresses, and the musical numbers keep ‘em coming back for more. Fans of high school anime, musical anime, and slice-of-life comedy have plenty of reasons to add it to their rotation. As fans, you already know this. Here are six anime for fans of Star-Mu.

6. K-On!

K-On! dvd
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" April 2009 – June 2009 "]

At Sakuragaoka Girls High School, the light music club is on its last legs. That is, until recent inductee Yui Hirasawa misunderstands the club poster and expresses interest in joining as one of the required minimum four members, along with classmates Ritsu, Mio, and Tsumugi. There are, however, a few problems: she has absolutely no experience playing music, can’t read sheet music, and doesn’t even own the instrument the other girls want her to play. But the energy and heart of their performance gives her the determination to see it through. K-On! has plenty to offer fans of High School Star Musical. Although it takes place at an all-girls school, the high school environment will feel immediately familiar. The series has a quirky cast of core characters that have a very entertaining dynamic as they learn the ins and outs of musical club life, and there’s plenty of comedy and heart to tie the whole thing together.

5. Uta no Prince Sama

Uta no Prince Sama dvd
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" July 2011 – September 2011 "]

Based on a popular visual novel video game series, Uta no Prince-Sama tells the story of idol fan girl and aspiring pop sensation Haruka Nanami. Haruka is a girl with dreams of composing music, especially for the idol she reveres. In hopes of achieving her dreams, she enrolls in Saotome, a prestigious performing arts school. If she is successful at school, she’ll get a head start on rocketing forward in her career, but the extremely competitive, eccentric student body is comprised of aspiring composers, would-be (and actual) idols, famous singers, and more. Much like High School Star Musical, music plays a very important role throughout the course of the show. Saotome Academy is just as cutthroat as Ayanagi, even if the student body is a bit more eccentric. The show’s overarching plot is broken up by plenty of silly character beats (including a transforming, evil prince), and the characters prove themselves incredibly likeable as they navigate the social minefield that is high school while trying to achieve their dreams.

4. Free!

Free! dvd
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" July 2013 – September 2014 "]

Free! is set in the small town of Iwatobi, and follows the story of the taciturn but determined Haruka Nanase. The story begins with Haruka and his childhood friends crowned winners of an elementary school swimming tournament before going their separate ways. However, they reunite in Iwatobi High School, and when Haruka loses a swim match in the school’s run down pool, the friends create a swim club, determined to get back in shape and make the club a competitive success. Although this show doesn’t adhere to the musical theme of previous entries on the list, it has plenty to offer fans of High School Star Musical. Obviously, they share the high school setting, although Iwatobi is a much different environment. The story has a heavy emphasis on the bonds formed during club activities, and the dedication demanded to make the club a success. The characters are relatable and have unique foibles that help propel the plot forward as they come to terms with the nature of their friendships and the way things have changed since childhood.

3. La Corda D’Oro: Primo Passo

La Corda D’Oro Primo Passo dvd
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" October 2006 – March 2007 "]

Seiso Academy is a school that caters to the musically inclined as well as general students looking to excel in their studies. One such student, Kahoko Hino, is a lover of music who never picked up an instrument. That changes after a fateful run in with Lili, a fairy who gifts Kahoko with a magical violin that allows her to play any songs she truly loves, and she agrees to enter the school’s highly competitive musical tournament, the Concours. La Corda D’Oro offers a somewhat whimsical twist on the musical theme enjoyed by fans of Star-Mu, but the classical music plays an important role in the series. Just like High School Star Musical, it’s a large part of how the characters grow closer. Like other entries on the list, and Star-Mu in particular, the high school setting is an important playground for the characters to interact and explore their feelings for one another, all while trying to juggle the demands of extracurricular activities and rigorous high school academia. As the contest draws nearer, the viewer, like Kahoko, begins to feel a very real fondness for her competition.

2. Nodame Cantabile

Nodame Cantabile dvd
[Information episodes=" 45 " aired=" January 2007 – March 2010 "]

Nodame Cantabile centers around two equally passionate aspiring musicians at Momogaoka College with very different personalities. There is Shinichi Chiaki, an overbearing, somewhat arrogant perfectionist who plays several instruments and dreams of becoming a musical conductor but suffers from a crippling fear of flying over the ocean. Then, there is Megumi Noda, an eccentric, somewhat sloppy pianist who enjoys her music the way she enjoys her life; playful, and by ear. An accidental encounter blossoms into a one-sided romance, and as Megumi tries to win the heart of Shinichi, they get to know themselves and their classmates better. Star-Mu fans will find plenty to love in Nodame Cantabile. Like Star-Mu, the show is heavily inspired by and often features music to express its themes. Much like High School Star Musical, the heart of the show is the budding relationship between its main characters. As the plot progresses and they discover more about themselves and each other, they begin to mature and their relationship develops deeper meaning. But that doesn’t mean that the show doesn’t know how to have fun, since there are plenty of hilarious comedic beats, just like in Star-Mu, to keep the story clipping along.

1. Ouran High School Host Club

Ouran High School Host Club dvd
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" April 2006 – September 2006 "]

No list of recommendations for anime that are club oriented and set in high school would be complete without mentioning Ouran High School Host Club. The show takes place at the titular Ouran Academy, an incredibly prestigious high school attended by Japan’s wealthiest, most influential budding socialites. Except, of course, diligent student Haruhi Fujioka. Haruhi is a scholarship student who becomes a de-facto (if indentured) member of the school’s infamous Host Club after shattering a priceless vase. Each episode, the Host Club (comprised of boys catering to a spectrum of feminine desires) hosts events with varying themes. This show has plenty to offer fans of Star-Mu. While music doesn’t play quite as prominent a role in the goings on as it does in other entries on the list, each episode is themed, and music plays a big part of that. Ouran Academy hosts a bizarre but earnest cast of characters inside and out of the Host Club, and they are the heart of the show, much like the aspiring inductees in Star-Mu. The school has so much personality it could be a character in and of itself, and no club seems quite as demanding as the Host Club. While the show oozes an eccentric comedic overtone, just like High School Star Musical, it often deals with rather mature themes, such as gender identity and discrimination, socio-economic perception, and friendship. Definitely check it out.

So what better way to take a look into this phenomenon than through anime. Whether it’s kids shows, science fiction nonsense or excellent character stories, the world of idol anime has a lot to offer. Here’s 10 standout shows that display the spirit of the idol in the best way possible.

10. Aikatsu!

Aikatsu dvd
[Information episodes=" 163 " aired=" October 2012 - Present "]

Starting off with the big shots, Aikatsu is one of Bandai’s vanguards when it comes to their hit franchises. At 163 episodes, Aikatsu is huge amongst younger audiences and is incredibly influential. When Ichigo Hoshimiya is invited by a friend to join the idol training academy, Starlight Academy, she enters into a brand new world of rivals, friendship and the wonders of idol life. But Aikatsu is more than just fun and friendship. There’s some realities of the idol industry that’s explored really well, diving into PR, interviews and public image. Sure, this might be a normal thing for idol series in general but for something as hugely popular within a younger demographic as this, it’s impressive to see this level of information being delivered through the show.

9. Show By Rock!!

[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" April 2015 - June 2015 "]

Show By Rock!! is fantastic in the weirdest ways and it’s one that’s somewhat difficult to explain in a sensical manner. But I’ll try. A girl who is too nervous to join her school band gets transported into a mysterious fantasy world powered by the magic of music. She turns into a catgirl for some reason or another and joins a band. They turn into CGI animals when they perform. Now you’re either hooked or confused by that summary but for those still with me, Show By Rock!! is an absolute blast. It’s hilariously funny, ridiculous and brilliant all at the same time, offering one of the cheesiest experiences I’ve ever had watching anime. And if Season 1 isn’t enough, a sequel has been announced!

8. The iDOLM@STER: Cinderella Girls

The iDOLM@STER Cinderella Girls dvd
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" January 2015 - October 2015 "]

Okay, so The Idolm@ster: Cinderella Girls may not hold a candle to the original, but that doesn’t stop it from being great in its own right. This is particularly true for its second half where it put unexpected characters together, exploring each of the cast’s personalities more thoroughly. It quickly gets into its stride, no longer relying on one-note characteristics and creating these moments that can be genuinely regarded as special. It’s a whole new cast for the Idolm@ster franchise and there’s so much to explore here as the idols and producers try to make the Cinderella Project a big success. Much like the original series, it’s an inspirational journey within the idol industry as they must gain fame and recognition to achieve their goals on the main stage.

7. Uta no☆Prince-sama♪ Maji Love 1000%

Uta no Prince-sama Maji Love dvd
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" July 2011 - September 2011 "]

Let’s try a different approach. Maybe what you’re looking for isn’t a story about idols in skirts and ribbons, but rather a story about camp men in fancy suits. Uta no Prince-sama is one of the most popular series within the genre of male idols as it captures us with its charismatic charm. Whilst the setup is certainly one of a reverse harem, even the female lead, Haruka becomes a key part of the idol group. Uta no Prince offers something that is both familiar, yet distant to many idol fans who will have enjoyed other series on this list. Despite it being somewhat unappealing to the male viewer, I’d highly recommend it regardless as much of the interactions and basic structure you’ll be used to is still ingrained within it. Oh, and the music is actually really good too. That’s probably important.

6. Pretty Rhythm: Aurora Dream

Pretty Rhythm Aurora Dream dvd
[Information episodes=" 51 " aired=" April 2011 - March 2012 "]

Much like many other picks on this list, Pretty Rhythm: Aurora Dream is originally based on a video game where the player must dance to the rhythm of the song. However, unlike many of the picks here, Pretty Rhythm isn’t just a game about dancing, with it also having a heavy focus on fashion. So with source material like this, it’s no surprise that this idol show takes a heavy focus on the public image side of being an idol. Pretty Rhythm is charming in its own special way as these superidols known as “Prism Stars” aim to become “Prism Queen”s and conquer the stage in this fun series. Yes, it’s another combination between the slice of life and idol genres, but through its lovable cast, it’s capable of supporting itself on its own merits through character interactions and the performances themselves.

5. AKB0048

H1393-02 Wcase_next_VOL.03
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" April 2012 - July 2012 "]

Idols are forever, as AKB0048 clearly demonstrates. During the 21st century a world war breaks out, leaving the planet Earth devastated. With no other choice, the human race escapes the planet to settle across the galaxy and find a new future. But with this comes conflict and corruption as some planets start to regulate the entertainment industries, including idols when the world needs them most. So, the sci-fi successor group AKB0048 must travel the stars as a rogue group, fighting against corrupt governments with the aim of reaching the people’s hearts in an attempt to reunite humanity. It’s definitely strange and by no means even remotely realistic, but it takes these leaps of logic to create something genuinely special and different. There’s many ways to create an anime about the hit AKB48 band, but this was certainly out-of-the-box.

4. Futsuu no Joshikousei ga [Locodol] Yatte Mita. (Locodol)

Locodol dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" July 2014 - September 2014 "]

Locodol is a very very easy show to love. Take away the spectacle, the bright lights and the fame from your typical idol show and what are you left with? Locodol, of course! Focusing on local idols, Nanako and Yukari, they’re not performing huge stage shows or acting in advertising campaigns for huge corporations. They’re helping out their local stores, putting a wide smile on the faces of local residents and promoting the town to those that might choose to visit. It’s incredibly humble and it does so much to make this story stand out as a new direction for the genre, despite other shows being very much focused on the flashier side of this world. It even dives into the idea of local mascots acting as PR for regional towns with cheesy theme songs and family friendly events. It’s just lovely in every definition of the word and is highly recommended.

3. Wake Up, Girls!

Wake Up Girls dvd
[Information episodes=" 12 " aired=" January 2014 - March 2014 "]

Wake Up Girls is an idol show that is entirely aware of what it’s out to achieve. By presenting itself as a more grounded series in comparison to its competitors, Wake Up, Girls isn’t afraid to show both sides of what the idol industry really is. Occasionally a wonderful place but ever so often, a sickeningly dreadful one. After the prequel film that showed the group being set up, the series is very much focused on telling character stories and giving cause them to grow as people. Whilst Wake Up, Girls doesn’t deviate much from standard idol tropes and ideas, it very much has its own agenda when it comes to its tone and how it delivers its narrative. Just these small things give it so much plot direction with the characters starting as rookies and some having their own personal troubles. There’s really something special lying within Wake Up, Girls and I strongly recommend you take the time to find it.

2. Love Live!

dvd Love Live! School Idol Project
[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" January 2013 - March 2013 "]

Love Live! is arguably one of the most popular idol series out there. With Sunrise taking its next idol venture away from kids series and into the late night realm, Love Live appealed very quickly. Presented as this very oddly structured slice of life and idol show, Love Live captured audiences through its cast of 9 diverse characters, each with their own jokes and character dynamics, leading to it becoming a global success. Through the concept of “school idols”, where students represent their high schools through competition, Love Live seems to have found the ultimate blend and has capitalised on it big time. With a second season releasing the following year and then a film with a global theatrical release earlier this year, there’s plenty of Love Live to go around and don’t worry, it’s not too late to jump into the franchise now.

1. The iDOLM@STER

The iDOLM@STER dvd
[Information episodes=" 25 " aired=" July 2011 - December 2011 "]

The Idolm@ster is the best idol series yet and for very good reason. Everything that we expect of a series of this genre, Idolmaster gifts beyond our expectations. With one of the best casts in anime, every single character dynamic within this surprisingly large cast works exceptionally well. With groups splitting off from the larger studio, there’s plenty of opportunity for new interactions to arise and there’s rarely cases where it feels at all wrong. Whilst it is the typical, “Group of girls try to become more popular idols” story, it’s always presented in new and unique ways, turning what should be boring PR events into something the viewer really wants to get involved in. Nothing feels obligatory or forced, every part of this puzzle piece finely fits into one of the larger stories, creating moments that can genuinely be regarded as standout all the way throughout.

The iDOLM@STER wallpaper

So there’s some great idol shows that you really need to be checking out. Whilst some of them may fit under the tag of ‘generic’, there’s some really special shows here that expand beyond the definition of “Idol anime” to create new stories. If there’s anything that I missed (There probably is), let us know in the comments section.

Beginning as an otome music game, and making its way to one of the biggest franchise in the anime industry in Japan, Uta no Prince-sama is filled with stunningly handsome, talented boys with gorgeous voices that had proven effective in killing every fangirl’s heart with a single whisper. Having finished its fourth Maji Love Live concert earlier this January, fans were graced with a much-awaited news: another new season in Fall 2016! Impatient to see the ST☆RISH boys back up on screen? Or for the Quartet Night senpai who’s been getting even more screen time ever since Maji Love Revolution began? Or are you extremely curious about the new HEAVENS members? Well, fall is still a while away, but in the meantime, let’s take a look at our selection on the best Uta no Prince-sama characters, and see if you could spot your favorite!

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

10. Aijima Cecil

Cecil Aijima

What better way to start but with the actual Prince amongst the other Princes? Aijima Cecil, the Prince of Agnapolis, the seventh member of ST☆RISH. Coming straight out of a fairytale as a cursed Prince, seeing him for a first time might make you think he’s mysterious and dreamy, enchanting with his gorgeous green eyes—which he is, but what would touch your heart would be his child-like curiosity and his sensitivity to others’ emotions. He plays the flute, and is able to connect to the gods directly through the Muses, and he’s the one who brings the Agna Dance. Despite his initial mysterious appearance in the first season in the anime, Cecil steals people’s hearts by steadily being cuter and cuter in starting his actual appearance in the Maji Love 2000%.. Not to mention his adorably accented, sometimes-still-fumbling Japanese that Toriumi Kousuke brought to life. His songs are like warm invitation to enter a world of fairytale from faraway lands, vowing to take you through fantasy-like love. It doesn’t mean he would not stand up to defend you when the time calls for it—like how he confronted Camus about playing with Nanami in Maji Love Revolution, he’ll certainly show you his fierce, determined side, too!

9. Kotobuki Reiji

Reiji Kotobuki Uta no Prince-sama Maji Love 2000%

A funny, clown-like personality at the first glance might fool you, if it doesn’t endear him to you. Kotobuki Reiji, the oldest member of Quartet Night idol group, is one of the mature senpai of STARISH, assigned to guide both Tokiya and Otoya in the Master Course. His smile might be blinding, and Reiji might cajole like a big brother or act cutely in front of his peers and fans, but there’s a side to him that shows his mature side—seductive smiles, car rides, magic tricks, casual winks, the promising thrill of an adult relationship! It’s definitely the gap that would send your heart race! Reiji is also known for giving adorable nicknames for everyone, as well as his cute catch phrases—“Yoroshiku Maccho ccho☆!”—and of course, his fun maracas. He’s the type to hold his lover gently and keep them safe, but also the type who could make you laugh in a heartbeat. Most of his songs are upbeat and slightly flirtatious, a perfect fit for Morikubo Showtaro’s type of voice. In Quartet Night, Reiji is the one who wishes to have more work as Quartet Night the most, after getting inspired by STARISH’s harmony. A definite all-rounder who is nice to everyone, like a big brother, but also mature when the time calls, what more would you want?

8. Shinomiya Natsuki

Natsuki Shinomiya

Arguably the member of STARISH with the brightest personality, Natsuki loves everything small and cute. Amongst STARISH, Natsuki is the tallest, but he is also the most tender and gentle to everyone. Be careful not to accidentally take off his glasses, because then Satsuki, Natsuki’s other personality, would appear, and you would see a whole other side of Natsuki: the brash, extremely strong, temperamental, but also passionate and the sincerest. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say the two of them are like the yin and yang personality in one body; Natsuki doesn’t remember anything when Satsuki takes over, but regardless, he senses that someone is always protecting him, and he’s thankful for that. Known as a musical genius, Natsuki plays the viola now, but he used to play the violin as well and entered violin competitions with Syo back in his childhood. He also likes to bake, but anyone sane would advise you never to try whatever he comes up with in the kitchen. It’s the thought that counts, though; Natsuki shows his support through his cookings, like when he tried to cheer Nanami up by baking cookies. His songs are always amazingly good—a mix of pop rock with Taniyama Kishow’s powerful vocal—flying you up to the burning star with his passion for dreams and love, that you’d wish time itself would stop!

7. Mikaze Ai

Ai Mikaze Uta no Prince-sama Maji Love 2000%

The prettiest and youngest member of Quartet Night for sure, Mikaze Ai appears untouchable and very strict at first, but later it’s shown that he’s very hardworking and expects everyone around him to be the same. Here’s the twist: he is actually an artificial intelligence, an idol robot created on the order of Shining Saotome, so he’s constantly learning on understanding human emotions, feelings and bonds. Ai always observes everything calmly and quietly, and has a knack in predicting everything correctly, but when it comes to new emotions he’s yet to understand, the way he pauses and puzzles it out would make your heart skip a beat! Ai is assigned to train both Natsuki and Syo in the Master Course. He also plays the synthesizer. The best way to look at Ai’s feelings are through his songs—a lot of them are slow ballads with high notes delivered smoothly by Aoi Shouta, beautifully quiet the way Ai is, reflecting his efforts to understand people and how he is affected by the emotions he learns. His charming points would be his honesty and straight-forward way of thinking that just makes his beauty shine even more. When he gets motivated and throws his everything into what he does, such as when Quartet Night decides to go against STARISH with all their might, Ai’s quiet determination and hardwork definitely endears him to heart!

6. Jinguuji Ren

Ren Jinguuji

The most charismatic member of STARISH, Jinguuji Ren is also known as arguably the hottest member, practically oozing pheromones wherever he goes. Once voted as the member fans wish to be their boyfriend the most, Ren is a very smooth-talker and a ladies’ man. As the third son of the wealthy Jinguuji family, Ren used to dislike attending Saotome Academy because he thought his brother just sent him to be an idol in order to promote their family’s company. In truth, though, his brother sent him because he knew of Ren’s passion and brilliance in music. Through Nanami and other STARISH members, though, Ren discovers back his passion for music, and wholeheartedly puts his feelings in working as an idol. He’s very easy-going and might seem loose at times, but he’s really just a boy who loves freedom and values having choices in life. The flashback scene to his childhood that showed him playing with Masato might just be the cutest image you’d ever see! Ren is very flirtatious, though, so prepare your heart to race wildly if he appears with a rose and seductively calls you his ‘lady’. Most of his songs are intense if a bit flirtatious, conveying his fiery passion and love, completely made for Suwabe Junichi’s performance. To add to his charm, Ren also plays saxophone, is interested in foreign languages, and speaks Italian. Definitely a catch, don’t you think?

5. Ittoki Otoya

Otoya Ittoki

If you like a bubbly, exceedingly kind, and energetic boys, Otoya is definitely your guy. He’s pure, trusts people, and always tries his best to be helpful, to the point that you might even think he’s an angel! His positive and friendly personality makes him very easy to approach, and since he’s the kind of person who always tries his hardest to improve and be optimistic, you’d feel like you want to support him always and watch him grow. Otoya grew up in an orphanage, and is known as “Oto-nii” to the orphanage kids who are younger than him. He loves sports, but he loves singing even more—a lot of his songs are the upbeat, optimistic songs delivered with the same spirit by Terashima Takuya, and they’re great songs to cheer you up on your bad days! Otoya plays the guitar, befitting of his upbeat personality. Compared to his roommate Tokiya, Otoya might seem childish, but he’s actually a good big brother to the orphanage kids! The childish parts of him, like not liking green peppers and black coffee, are very endearing to see. Otoya’s charm point is his kindness and how he thinks of everyone else and how to help them. Before his adorable attitude and his straightforward determination, you might just find your heart skip a beat, especially when he would not hesitate to stand up for you, and shows his support in everything that you do!

4. Kurosaki Ranmaru

Ranmaru Kurosaki Uta no Prince-sama Maji Love 2000%

Assigned to be the mentor of both Ren and Masato, Ranmaru is another member of Quartet Night who might just steal your heart with his passion for his dreams. A rocker through and through, Ranmaru is a very moody person, but also often gets flustered by sincere praising words. His family used to be very wealthy, on par with Masato and Ren’s, but after his father was betrayed by a colleague, the Kurosaki family fell into an immense debt. After his father’s death, Ranmaru takes it to himself to pay his family’s debt. This, coupled with how several of his bands before he became an idol always disbanded, makes it hard for him to trust anyone. Ranmaru might seem rude, but he has a strong sense of duty and a fiery passion for his dream and music that would no doubt lends the same sense when it comes to love. If you can gain his trust, he’d definitely show his softer side to you—the Ranmaru who likes to pet and feed cats, who is good at cooking, and would ruffle your hair in shows of affection. The contrast between his softer side and his fiery, determined and hard personality is his charm point, making each of his smile a treasure! Most of his songs are rock songs, true to his nature and the natural song genre of his seiyuu, Suzuki Tatsuhisa. Not only is he stunningly hot, Ranmaru also plays bass and is very fashionable, and you’d undoubtedly feel very safe being with him!

3. Hijirikawa Masato

Masato Hijirikawa Uta no Prince Sama!

The old-fashioned Japanese type. Exceedingly beautiful and elegant, but make no mistake, when it comes to determination and sincerity, Masato doesn’t lose to anyone. As a scion of the wealthy Hijirikawa family, Masato was supposed to take over his family’s company, but he stubbornly chose to enroll at Saotome Academy to be an idol. At first glance, Masato looks to be an untouchable, stoic, elegant young master, but in actuality he’s adorably awkward when it comes to talking with people and a very down-to-earth, gentle person. He loves things like melon pan, and a lot of times he cooks for others as well. Gorgeous the way Japanese paintings are, elegant, kind, and great at both calligraphy and cooking, what’s not to like? Once he’s behind a piano, Masato would captivate you, especially coupled with his music. Most of his songs have very poetic lyrics, reflecting his thoughts about future and feelings, flawlessly sung by Suzumura Kenichi. Despite his stoic appearances, Masato feels things very strongly and is very passionate and protective about things he deems important. As he was born and raised in a very proper and strict family, Masato grows up to be a very pure young man. Once you see his adorable side—liking melon pan, putting on aprons, enjoying hot springs, watching snow falls, or just ducking away from bugs, you might just find your heart skips a beat there!

2. Ichinose Tokiya

Tokiya Ichinose

Mr. Perfectionist who never loses his cool and has the smile that melts your heart instantly. At first, Tokiya seems aloof and cold to everyone, but later on he began to open up and shows a gentler, caring side. He’s very ambitious and proud about his dreams, but in STARISH he also learns how to treasure the friends who fight with him, and always looks forward to help them in any way he could. As an idol, Tokiya previously had a persona called HAYATO, who he pretended to be his twin brother and had to live a double-life because of it. On top of having a beautiful face, he was also voted as the sexiest men in a fashion magazine along with Ren—but let’s be real, his singing is super sexy, too. His songs range from sweet ballads to flirty, scandalous songs, but Miyano Mamoru as Tokiya sings them amazingly well. Tokiya is an all-rounder who is good at most of the things he does, including singing and playing various music instruments. He’s also very patient, even if he’s a bit shy in expressing his true feelings, and tends to express them through the lyrics of his songs. Being the perfectionist that he is, he would not stop his efforts until he gets something perfect, and no doubt he would put the same amount when it comes to his love life, too. Even his fellow STARISH members had expressed their admiration—Otoya openly said that Tokiya’s singing is perfect, and that he’s always very nice to him. Prepare for your heart to melt before his smile, even more so when his cool demeanor opens up to a softer personality inside, a peek into the secret Mr. Perfectionist holds!

1. Kurusu Syo

Shou Kurusu

Syo might be the shortest one out of all STARISH members, but he’s also the manliest out of them! He’s even more upbeat and energetic than Otoya, and even though he looks cute thanks to his size, everyone remarks that his soul is the most manly of all. He’s hot-headed and sometimes easily baited to anger, especially when Natsuki is involved, but at the same time Syo cares about everyone around him very much, and even stays close to Natsuki in order to keep guard if he accidentally drops his glasses and Satsuki appears. Syo is also very zealous, braver than anyone else, and always tries his hardest in everything that he does. You can easily see this reflected in his songs—always upbeat and fun, encouraging you to fight and run forward, befitting Shimono Hiro’s singing style a lot. Despite being the smallest in STARISH, Syo has won the first place of several popular character ranking in Japan. Being stylish on top of having an adorable face, bringing fun into everything and very encouraging, not to mention his ‘manly’ soul that shines when he shows everyone how brave he is in facing his fears and phobia—Syo is not your usual Knight in Shining Armour, but he could be your Knight, always there to support and protect you!

Shou Kurusu Uta no Prince-sama Maji Love 2000% wallpaper

Uta no Prince-sama is a very fun series; good animation and splashing colors and sparkles on top of having gorgeous male characters who would make amazing boyfriends. Its huge franchise proves that having a light-hearted, fun storytelling doesn’t mean people don’t get attached to the characters—they are, after all Princes, and they give dreams to the audience. Each of them are unique to themselves, an embodiment of a trope and an image, and is that not the essence of idols? Let us know which Prince is your favorite!

Unfortunately for her, the situation and her friends made her join the high school band yet again. Once again, Kumiko must strive for the high school competition and make amends with fellow middle school band member, Reina Kousaka. Hibike was very well received due to its balanced portrayal on the genres of Music, School Life and Slice of Life. If any one of you were ever in the high school band club, you definitely will be able to empathize with the hardship of playing the instrument as a team and struggling to make it into the competition. Hibike does just that for you by painting a realistic look of a band club member and fulfilling the dreams and aspirations of those that did not made it. It shares the same simplicity of daily lives in a music club as HaruChika, although Hibike places more emphasis on woodwind instruments and also less on the mystery

This easy to watch anime shows the fun that occurs within the Light Music Club! Simple and fun to watch, K-on has a good collection of music, some being very catchy. K-on has a stronger focus on music than HaruChika, but not so much on the mystery. Both share the same developments of a club lacking in members, and then slowly building it up from nothing. K-on was, and perhaps still one of the top high school slice of life anime.

[Editorial Tuesday] Music: Setting the Mood in Anime

Hibike Euphonium wallpaper
[ad_top1 class="mb40"]
Hibike Euphonium wallpaper

Music plays an integral part in anime, it allows the anime to go beyond the fourth wall and reach the viewer's’ sensibilities, putting a depth of emotions in it as well. That is because music is often said to be the universal language of mankind and the language of the soul. Anyone is able to simply listen to it and truly understand the sentiments that music is trying to evoke. Be it a fast paced rock/metal track or a slow, calming classical/soft tune, music sets the mood of the anime, and truly communicates the inner emotions of the characters, or the situation in a way not even the images can’t describe. Today, we go through how some of the most popular songs in anime that depicted the mood of the whole anime series flawlessly, ranging from the Original Sound Tracks (OST), to the Openings and Endings (OPs & EDs). Firstly, we will move on to how music is used as a tool to portray and transfer emotions, setting the mood for the anime. Subsequently, we'll talk about one of the anime in which the music is really what defined it and made it popular.

[ad_top2 class="mt40"]

Where music is used to express emotions and situations

Music is a powerful tool. Not only can it be used to tell a story, it can also be used to describe human emotions and situations. Below are some examples of where music sets the mood of an anime or a character's feelings such as a particularly sad event or a happy event.

1. Expression of emotions - Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso

shigatsu wa kimi no uso wallpaper

The study of music was conceptualized in the West with the study of classical music. Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso centralises on the theme of classical music. Shigatsu uses the foundational study of music to portray the development of characters using suitable famous pieces from masters such as Beethoven and Chopin to display anguish, pain and desolation of the pianist, Arima Kousei. In contrast, the pieces of virtuoso violinists such as Kriesler and Saint-Saens are performed but the subtle differences in style and technique of Kaori Miyazono shows how music is the key to the freedom of expression and how it reflects her free-spirited personality. Although what was played were excerpts of pieces, the differences between mashing the keys on the keyboard and playing elegantly are shown by the different characters which are also reflective of their personality. One of the greatest quote from this anime that stands and remains as the maxim of music is "Music transcends words". To be honest, you need not to understand Japanese or even play music to understand the emotions depicted in this anime through the melodies and tones. You can hear the anguish and the pain of Arima simply by listening and how the soul is liberated from the free-spirited playing style of Kaori. The element that defines a musician after all, is his/her own personality and how they modify the music to reflect themselves and their mood.

2. Expression of doleful events - Clannad

Clannad wallpaper CD

Clannad is a highly reputed masterpiece in the genre of slice of life anime accented with bittersweet romance. Clannad's claim to fame comes from not just its story but the background music that perfectly complements the situation whenever a pivotal event occurs during the anime. Clannad OST was composed, arranged, and produced by Jun Maeda, Shinji Orito, and Magome Togoshi. This amazing beautiful soundtrack of the anime series consists of three disc with a total of 56 songs. The BGMs resonates with the hearts of the viewers through the heart-wrenching tale of Clannad augmented by the doleful music that demonstrates the beauty of human relations blooming amidst a torrential maelstrom of complications. The exceptionally emotional OST of Clannad evokes that sense of humanity in us that is empathy. As the feelings poured out of the characters, so does the music, which blends into the raw expression of emotions of the characters. The beauty of Clannad lies not just in a perfectly crafted story but in its stunning composition of music.

[ad_middle class="mt40 mb40"]

3. Expression of Energy and Hype - Action anime

The iconic ‘Only My Railgun’ by fripSide is a beloved favourite amongst anime fans being a staple of a form of music in J-pop culture. With a very fast tempo and an expertly crafted composition by Satoshi (Sat), and powerful vocals provided by Nanjo, this pop/trance track allowed fripSide to shoot to fame. This electrifying OP is synonymous with the main heroine, Misaka Mikoto - the Level 5 Electromaster in the anime A Certain Scientific Railgun the spin-off series of A Certain Magical Index

FateStay Night UBW 2nd Season Opening 2 Brave Shine

The OST of the revamped Fate/stay night: UBW contains new renditions of character themes and battle scenes. These OSTs are specific and significant to the characters that are appearing on-screen. With the final confrontation between Archer and Emiya in their Reality Marbles, the insert song for this epic battle does not fall short of expectations. ‘Last Stardust’ sung by Aimer starts off in a low pitch and then slowly ascending into a higher pitch. At its pinnacle during the chorus, the power of Aimer's vocals emanates revitalized energy with the chorus playing concurrently with Emiya finding the resolve to fight making the fight all the more epic and bringing it to a whole new level. From these two instances, you can see that music is not only reserved for emotional scenes and soft characters, but also for intense action, energetic and spirited sequences as well. There is something with hearing a rock piece or metal piece that really gets the mood going, you will instantly know that it is about to get real.

Where the Music Defines the Anime - Guilty Crown

Guilty Crown wallpaper CD

In year 2011, Guilty Crown was a much debatable anime. It was a split between the people that loved the anime, and the people that disliked the anime. Some felt that the story was underdeveloped, while some felt that the ending was just right and should've ended the way it ended. One thing was for sure, though, it was unanimous that the reason why Guilty Crown was so well-received, was the music. First OP 'My Dearest' sung by Supercell, and the second, 'The Everlasting Guilty Crown’ sung by Egoist, brought about a mad rave in the forums. It was undoubtedly dubbed the anime with the best music in the season. So what makes the music in Guilty Crown so good? First, both, the fast paced and dynamic OPs are very catchy, gets you hyped up, and being the mecha-action anime that it is, it’s very appropriate for the series. The sizzling and sensational OPs are what captures the heart of people and you can simply relish in the OP before every episode starts. Next, we look into the ED; ‘Departures’ Sung by Yu Na. Departures is a softer, calming that brings in instruments of a more delicate nature like the piano and the violin. The lyrics of the song are attuned with the conclusion of Guilty Crown despite being the first ED. At first glance, it seems like a very soothing piece, but all is revealed when the song is sung again at the conclusion of the anime, which puts everything in perspective. We won't spoil it for you if you haven't watched it. But for those that did, you know what we meant. Lastly, we look into the OSTs. Bios and ‘Euterpe’ sung by Mika Kobayashi and Egoist respectively. Bios being very fitting with the battle sequences which is sung entirely in German as a unique style of Mika's. Heavy instruments are used to harmonize with the powerful vocals of Mika that generally evokes a sense of power and the fighting spirit. ‘Euterpe’ is a sorrowful song that is sung at the very beginning which has desolation overlaying an aura of mystery. The OSTs encompasses both heavy and light genres. Both OPs and EDs shows that the series highlights the sequence of events very well. Bring an upbeat start to every episode with dynamic pop music and end it off with a soothing song after all that intense action. With the OSTs being a complement and an expression in situations of high intensity and introspection of the characters, Guilty Crown utilises music to portray the feelings of characters in a notable manner.

The Music is what Draws us into the Anime Scenes

nodame cantabile megumi wallpaper

Based on all of the above, have you ever experienced this before - as you play your favourite song and you reach the chorus or a certain point in the song, you experience a shiver up your spine and then feeling a momentary surge of ranging emotions? That is what a well composed melody can do for you. Try to watch an action or a romantic scene without background music, boring, right?. As we associate events in the anime with the music that is playing, we experience a burst of transient emotions that make us connect our own senses with the scenes we’re watching. Music stimulates us in a way no words could ever do. After all, music is the universal language and it allows us to connect to it without the need for prior exposure first. Innately, we all understand music, and while it may be hard to express it out, we see it as the raw emotions of the soul making it all the more easier to allow it to become synonymous with our own personal feelings. And that is why music adds a whole new depth of experience to your anime. Music is not simply about setting the mood in anime, it IS the mood of anime. There are many good animes with good music out there as well, we will like to give special honourable mentions to Nodame Cantabile, Hibike Euphonium, Psycho Pass and Noragami as well. Do you have any OSTs, OPs & EDs that you love? Has it affected you in any way at all? Share with us in the comments below and we will see you next time!

K-On! Is the charming and lighthearted story of a light music club and it's members. Mio Akiyama, Yui Hirasawa, Tsumugi Kotobuki, Ritsu Tainaka and Azusa Nakano make up the club and form a band called 'Hokago Tea-Time.' The series is a hysterical SoL detailing the experiences and growth of the club. They start of as 5 very different people who, likely, would end up going along very different paths in life. However, as they grow together, more and more do they want to stay together. K-On! Is a beautiful series with great characters and we're going to show the 10 best.

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

10. Tomi Ichimonji

Tomi Ichimonji K-On!!

You might not know her by name, but Tomi Ichimonji is Yui's elderly neighbor. She's always on good terms with Yui and the rest of her family, and the Hirasawa's always make time to try to chit-chat with her. You can tell they really respect Tomi Ichimonji. Yui, Ui and Nodoka all have a long-standing relationship with her as their long-time neighbor, and Tomi did a lot for them when they were younger. She exemplifies the graceful, caring presence of an elderly person who looks out for everyone including her neighbors, and she's someone who should be treated with great love and respect in all communities.

9. Jun Suzuki

Jun Suzuki K-On!

Jun is close friends with Azusa Nakano and Ui Hirasawa and despite not having as much screen-time as them, she's still lovable in her own right. Jun is a pretty care-free personality but can be a bit of a ditz in terms of accidentally becoming a little demanding every now and again. Still, she's very kind and sweet hearted and gets along very well with everyone. Jun is still trying hard to improve herself as a bass-player, partially because of her admiration of Mio. She may not be as much as a focus as the rest of the cast but Jun has a very playful and easygoing personality which makes her easy to life.

8. Azuza Nakano

k-on azusa nakano 00

Azuza (Or Azu-Nyan) for short, is the first of the 5 main characters to make it on the list. There's really no bad K-On! Characters, and she's up against some stiff competition which puts her relatively low in the standings. However, Azu-Nyan is still a wonderful and charming character. She has one of the more interesting character arcs in the series for starters. At first, she's taken aback by Yui's slacker attitude and Is upset that the club doesn't take a more serious approach. However, overtime she comes to appreciate the slow-place of the club, as well as its members. While growing accustomed to this, she still maintains her seriousness and passion, quite-like Mio, which is a very admirable quality.

7. Nodoka Manabe

Nodoka Manabe K-On!

Nodoka is a loveable little bookworm. Her mature and responsible demeanor forms a yin to Yui's air-headed antics. Nodoka is practically an archetype of the intelligent, industrious and dutiful student who always excels in her academics and is involved with the Student Council. It's pretty much only through her reminders that the Light Music club remains in good-standing within the school, something which Ritsu Is surely thankful for! Nodoka strikes a perfect balance between pushing airheads like Yui and Ritsu to be responsible, while also understanding that there's a lot of good that comes from their care-free nature.

6. Ui Hirasawa

ui hirasawa k-on

When your parents named your big sister Yui while naming you, simply, 'ui', it might feel like you got the short end of the stick. However, Ui totally shines as a little sister and often is more mature and responsible than her beloved onee-chan, Yui. Ui Hirasawa is simply always there for her big sister, in a way that's totally endearing and make her one of the most lovable characters in the show. Probably one o the best moments in all of K-On! Is when Yui and the rest of Hokago Tea Time unveil the song that Yui had written about her little sister. Ui isn't just an extension of Yui, but the two have such a beautiful relationship and they both gain so much from each other as sisters.

5. Tsumugi Kotobuki

k-on tsumugi kotobuki 00

Tsumugi Kotobuki, affectionately called 'mugi', is everyone's favorite rich girl. She often acts like a typical Ojou-chan, carrying herself in a very proper and well behaved manor. However, Tsumugi is much more than just her pampered upbringing. She has an curiosity that borders on awkward because her upbringing has come with a whole host of different social cues that the rest of the cast don't share. However, these moments come off more adorable than anything. Mugi has a lot of weird quirks like very above average physical strength, as well as a propensity to assume slightly intimate or lewd implications from everyday interactions.

4. Ritsu Tainaka

k-on ritsu tainaka 00

Ritsu can be as air-headed as Yui but she's a hugely important piece of the light music club. Her comical and fun personality drive a lot of the good times between the club and her gags seem to always hit home. Often times Mio is the only one not laughing but she probably appreciates Ritsu the most since the pair are childhood friends. In fact, her relationship with Mio is one of her cutest points. Ritsu can look very independent and almost tomboyish at time but she gets fiercely jealous whenever she feels Mio is ignoring her in favor of someone else. Ritsu holds her friends close and none more so than Mio. She may be a little crazy at times but in the end Ritsu is reliable and good-natured and is one the best characters in the show.

3. Sawako Yamanaka

Sawako Yamanaka K-On!

I strongly feel that Sawako is like an older Yui who's managed to get it together somewhat. However, this veil of maturity can come crashing down at any moment. Sawako holds the air of a responsible teacher, but can still understand where here students are coming from emotionally partially because she still a little kid at heart. Her high schol life was just as rambunctious as Yui's, only she grew up perhaps in a more extreme era, leading her to start a heavy metal band in place of the more whimsical and moe rock of the light music club. She has strong memories of those days and still can get as wild as she was back then, in addition to her new found love of costume making for the band. Sawako is still very earnest despite all the different hats she wears, and is loved universally for it. This is why she has the highest spot of all the non-main characters on this list.

2. Yui Hirasawa

k-on yui hirasawa 00

Ah, Yui. Yui is an phenomenal character and I question anyone to look at her character arc and tell me that K-on! Is a show where 'nothing happens.' Yui is completely off the charts in terms of absent-mindedness, her high school life would probably be in a ditch if not for her friends being so observant and helpful. But as to why they are friends with her in the first place, I think the answer is that Yui is just incredibly unique in how genuine and good-willed she is as a person. There's no harm that Yui could wish on anyone, I think. She has such a good and pure heart and in the end she worries probably more about other people than herself. Yui is the emotional core of the show, and one of the most lovable characters by far.

1. Mio Akiyama

k-on mio akiyama 00

Mio is completely adorable for a number of ways, but fundamentally so in how her quiet and composed demeanor are actually only one part of her personality. Opposite to those traits, Mio is a scaredy-cat, shy and also more rambunctious than she lets on, at least with certain people. When it comes to Ritsu's antics Mio is always quick to playfully whack her. Despite this, Mio is really beautiful inside and out. She looks like a stereotypical Yamato Nadeshiko and has attracted a school-wide fan club. Mio Is probably the most driven and intelligent of the group, and she's often the brains of the operation. She's great on bass and also writes a majority of the band's lyrics. Despite being more reserved, she still shares the sweetness and genuine good-heart of all light music members.

4. Show By Rock!! Short!!

Show By Rock Short dvd
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Official Website" url="http://showbyrock-anime.com/" ]
[Information episodes=" TBA " aired=" July 2016 "]

The widely popular anime, Show by Rock!!, which aired last year, following the original storyline of the original rhythm game, would have a short anime series this summer! This should be enough to tide off our thirst for the second season of Show by Rock!!. The short anime series would have the original staff and cast returning, apparently aiming to be a “carefree and enjoyable” series before the sequel comes. BONES will be handling the animation, and the key visual available is looking exceptional already. There will be a new PV every month featuring bands that would appear in the second season, and the shorts anime series itself would feature the bands from the original series, including Plasmagica and ShinganCrimsonz. Show by Rock!! is originally a rhythm game by Geechs, featuring Sanrio’s first project for older males and young adults. The game itself featured over twenty bands, though the anime that aired last year only included at least five of them. The anime followed the plot of the original rhythm game, with Hijirikawa Cyan of Plasmagica as its main character, a shy girl who is talented in music, and just happened to have the luck of getting sucked into the world of game she is playing and ends up joining Plasmagica in Midi City. The cast of Show by Rock!! will be returning for Show by Rock!! Short!!, which means Inagawa Eri, Uesaka Sumire, Numakura Manami, and Sakura Ayane are coming back as Plasmagica together! Among the cast returning also included Hayami Saori, Kayano Ai, Miyano Mamoru, Taniyama Kishow, Uchiyama Kouki, Han Megumi, and Ohsaka Ryouta. Looks like Short!! is at least going to provide us some excitement and good music before the sequel.

3. Tsukiuta

[Information episodes=" TBA " aired=" July 2016 "]

Lucky for you girls, Tsukiuta is giving us the idol boys for the anime instead of the goddesses! A franchise that revolves around the 12 anthropomorphized months, Tsukiuta had carved its own success through countless music and drama CDs, with songs composed by popular Vocaloid producers. The franchise also has a mobile app called Tsukino Park, which features mini-games and characters from the franchise. Studio Pierrot will be handling the animation, and the excitement for it is already in the air; there are countdown video messages from the boys, and Animate Ikebukuro would have an advanced screening of the first episode on July 2nd. While Tsukiuta originally have both male and female idol units, the anime seems to be focusing on the two male idol units: Six Gravity, with its six members representing the months December to May, and Procellarum, which members represent the months June to November. The anime would have all members of the group living in a dorm together, and each episode would be focusing on a different character. So far, Fluna and Seleas, the two female units of the franchise, have not been mentioned to appear yet. As the franchise itself has already had big successes with its CDs, the music aspects of the anime would hopefully be great, especially for those who are into Vocaloid. The seiyuu line up is, of course, simply amazing, listing top-tier seiyuu widely known to sing well: from Kaji Yuuki, KENN, Kondo Takashi, Hatano Wataru, Aoi Shouta, to Hosoya Yoshimasa—half of the seiyuus in Tsukiuta line up are also singers with their own solo singing careers. Those who are fans of these names, definitely do check Tsukiuta the Animation, and enjoy their songs!

[Information episodes=" TBA " aired=" July 2016 "]

Probably the most anticipated music anime Summer 2016 considering its huge franchise and fanbase, Love Live! Sunshine!! anime is part of the much bigger Love Live! Sunshine!! multimedia project—one that includes the game, one manga adaptation, internet TV and radio, and two released singles. Focusing on an all-new female idol group called Aqours, who are inspired by the famous school idol group µ’s, the nine high school girls formed their own idol group to try their best to save their school from closing. As a project, Love Live! Sunshine!! had been anticipated since early last year—the first teaser image was published in April 2005, and, true to the spirit of the Love Live! Projects, fans were involved in the creation of the group—from submitting possible group names, to voting, and polls on fans’ first impressions and what kind of images/activities they see of the new idols. Aqours’ first single was released on October 2015, and the second one had just been released last April, each single with a PV. They also have three different Mini Idol Unit Albums. The Aqours girls have also joined µ’s in Love Live! School Idol Festival mobile rhythm game—their cards were added to the game last January, even though the story chapters and songs would be added in July. After the huge success of Love Live! School Idol Festival project, one would have a lot of expectation and hopes for Love Live! Sunshine!!, and do far, Sunrise, Lantis and ASCII Media Work’s Dengeki G Magazine has yet to disappoint with this project. Among the beautiful voices we’re expecting to hear in Sunshine!! anime are Inami Anju, Aida Rikako, Saitou Shuka, Kobayashi Aika and Suzuki Aina. Don’t forget that the girls of Love Live! Sunshine!! are also making an appearance at Anisong World Matsuri this year at Anime Expo! Let’s all look forward to the new songs and stories Aqours would bring!

1. B-Project: Kodou Ambitious

B-Project Key Visual 2
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Official Website" url="http://bpro-anime.com/?from=lower" ]
[Information episodes=" TBA " aired=" July 2016 "]

A cross-media project by MAGES, B-Project: Kodou Ambitious is a series that focuses on male idol groups under the name B-PROJECT: Kitakore, Thrive, and MooNs. The anime story would revolve around the main character, Tsubasa, who just got hired by the A&R department of the major recording company called Gandala Music, and is assigned to oversee B-PROJECT. Dealing with ten male idols with different personalities can’t be easy for her now, can it? Those who are familiar with B-PROJECT previously would have known them from the series of CDs released under each unit mentioned above—with the addition of the Killer King unit, which seems to have not been mentioned in the plans for the anime (or would it be a surprise? We’ll see.)—with none other than T.M. Revolution sitting on the chair of executive producer for the whole project. You can already listen to what kind of music this anime would bring to you through the samples provided in the website, including the opening and ending themes of the anime. There seems to also be plans for a game under this title. Of course, as it is a music anime, the music plays an important aspect, too. On the list of seiyuus who voice (as well as sing) the characters are, so far, quite a satisfying line up. We have names well-known as both seiyuu and singer, namely Ono Daisuke, Kakihara Tetsuya, and Morikubo Showtarou. In the line up are also names that would sound familiar for people who love the fictional idol genre, such as Toyonaga Toshiyuki, Natsuki Hanae, Masuda Toshiki, and Kishio Daisuke. With all the name-dropping, the anime sounds like it’s shaping up to be a very ambitious project indeed!

Conclusion

All of the titles listed above have enjoyed some success with their earlier releases in the franchise, with a fanbase already buzzing in anticipation for the anime. With so many idols for Music Anime Summer 2016, hopefully the summer heat would not be so bad—or would it be the opposite, things will get hotter? Music anime in Summer 2016 will be offering us a wide range of idol types to enjoy; whether it’s Aqours, Plasmagica, Six Gravity, or MooNs, they are sure to be bringing us a wide range of music as well. And regardless, it’s an excitement befitting of summer. What’s better than enjoying these idols represent the bright, youthful, refreshing summer with their stories and music? After all, it is summer, and it is time to have fun!

Celebrity status, fame, and popularity are what drive the idol culture. Manufactured by the entertainment industry to reflect the needs of young adults, idols are meant to be cast as good role models and the envy of all group circles. When it comes to anime, idols are no different than what we observe in our day to day lives. In particular, anime idol boys are the token dreamboat: attractive, desirable, and perhaps spark a rebellious nature that draws our curiosities even more. With that being said, here is Honey’s Top 10 Anime Idol Boys who possess the qualities that many covet and crave.

What would be of anime without music? We are not talking only about the background music, but also about the character image songs, openings, endings and insert vocal songs. They can either add all the feels to a scene, or ruin it. It is a matter of having the perfect combination of vocal skills, lyrics and expression. Sometimes, the characters personal stories add emotional power to their voices. So, you might be wondering, which memorable anime singers in the female realm were spot on? Well, here are our recommendations.

10. Mima Kirigoe from Perfect blue

Everything in Mima’s life seems perfect. She is the leading member of the super famous idol group Cham! when she decides that the next step on her career should be quitting music and become an actress. From that point on, Mima is stalked by the people who believe her career shouldn’t have such a radical switch. Her professional life also suffers all sorts of strange incidents which will drive her to the verge of madness. This jewel by late director Satoshi Kon offers us a contrast of the often sugar coated life of music idols with a horror thriller. The leading character (Mima) is a talented young woman struggling to find the correct path by herself, which is far than easy on the professional and demanding world of idols. Her songs with Cham! are the perfect j-pop upbeat of the nineties and our Mima really enjoys her performances. She totally deserved a spot on our Top Ten!

The anime has been so successful that it received 3 seasons, following Miss monochrome in her struggles to become a famous idol. She even helps her fans out! That’s what we call a true anime idol. 6. Lala from D.Gray-man

D.Gray-man is a story about the war between two factions. The Earl of the Millenium and his army of Akuma aim to conquer the world, while the Exorcists are trying to save humanity. The protagonist, Allen Walker, has a special cursed eye that can see through the Akumas’ disguise. His tragic past will pursue him as Allen tries to find out how to defeat the Earl and how to survive the war. Yes, this show is not essentially about music, but you guys won’t deny that the songs are superb. Given the dark tones of the topics involved, the story of Lala and her voice stand out. Although her presence was rather short, this anime idol had her big moment when she sang for her master as he was dying. Lala would be capable of moving a stone with her vocals, I tell you!

4. Sheryl Nome and Ranka Lee from Macross Frontier

A fellow pilot apprentices called Alto Saotome and an aspiring idol girl called Ranka Lee get involved in the attack… and that is just the beginning of a new war and a new love triangle in the better Macross style. With the direction of Shoji Kawamori and the music of Yoko Kanno, nothing can seriously go wrong in an anime, right? Especially if such anime is closely tied to music and songs. If Sheryl and Ranka are good on their own, just wait until you listen to their duos! Their relationship of friendship and rivalry is complex, but no matter what, they will always be there to cheer Alto with their vocals.

3. Mitsuki Koyama from Full moon wo sagashite

Full moon wo Sagashite is the story of Mitsuki Koyama. Here we have a girl who dreams to become a professional singer despite battling with throat cancer. To make things worse, a pair of shinigami inform her that she only has one year of life left. Thus, Mitsuki decides to pursue her dream and make the best of her last year on Earth with the help of these two shinigami. Setting her sad backstory aside, Mitsuki really has talent for singing. Her voice, in great contrast with most of the heroines of anime, is deep. This suits much better the adult themes of the anime and of her songs. You won’t be able to watch this anime without shedding a tear or two when Mitsuki sings.

This time, the Macross Universe takes us to the year 2040, to a planet called Eden. Isamu Dyson and Guld Bowman, once childhood friends, are pilots competing to win the Supernova project. Sharon Apple, the most advanced virtual idol in the universe, visits the planet to hold a concert. Her manager and supplier of emotions is Myung Fang Long, who was once friends with Isamu and Guld. The appearance of Myung and Sharon will cause more than one problem in the planet, especially when a controversial software is installed on the virtual idol. Once more, Shoji Kawamori and Yoko Kanno strike with a well balanced story full of music. We could say that Sharon is artificial, but let’s not forget that her emotions come from a real human and she eventually internalize such emotions… even if they end up being dark. Her voice is quiet unique and the style of her music is eclectic and full of reverb. Yoko Kanno conferred on an interview that she has never composed songs on this way again, as they tended to “hypnotize” people.

Love Live! Sunshine!! is currently airing and it also reminded us how great and memorable the original Love Live! series was. Season 1 had a rough start, but makes up for it in Season 2, and the story finally concluded in the movie. If they fix some of the problems the original had, and keep the idol formula, Love Live! Sunshine!! will become another success and who knows, it may even surpass the original. Before that (eventually) happens, let’s look back at the original series and reminisce how great the cast was. Sure the characters were flawed like some of them having chipmunk voices, Kotori almost ruined season 1 with her angst at the end (put down the pitchforks, please…), etc., but nobody is perfect, right? Flawed or not, one thing’s for sure is each character is unique and each can win the hearts of the audience in their own way. Again there are lots to talk about, so for this list how about we narrow potential topics to who are the most stylish or well-dressed Love Live! Characters? Yeah, let’s do that! It’s time to show off!

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

10. Principal Minami

Mother Minami lovelive!

Now, now, the principal isn’t part of µ's, but she is the mother of µ's member Minami Kotori and contributed a lot to the school idol project, and heck, she helped the girls go to America in the movie. She’s no idol, but she’s part of what made µ's as it is today. Principal Minami was never seen in casual clothing, and most of the time she’s in school with her suit. But despite that, she is a very sharp dresser with a suit matching her overall appearance. Her long dull gray hair goes perfectly well with her white and gray colored suit, that literally defines color uniformity. Nothing in her appearance stand out of place and with that snappy look, you can be confident that this woman can get any job done thrown at her.

09. Hoshizora Rin

Rin Hoshizora Love Live! School Idol Project

Good at sports and often seen as a tomboy at first, Rin had undergone a major transformation over the course of the series… in terms of fashion sense. You see, back when she was young, kids see her as this tomboy who loves sports and doesn’t wear any skirt like any other girl her age, and they teased her appearance at lot. Around high school and a member of µ's, we see her more of her feminine side coming out, and there’s even an episode dedicated to her transformation. Ever since Rin wears skirts with matching clothes and oftentimes her clothes have cat-themed designs on them. Rin can’t “Nyan~” without cats, don’t you agree?

08. Kousaka Honoka

Kousaka Honoka Bokura no Live Kimi to no Life

If you put Honoka on a cute-to-mature scale, Honoka is around the middle part of the cute spectrum—cute, but not overly cute. Honoka isn’t the stylish type and doesn’t have any noticeable preference in clothing other than preferring the color orange and sometimes pink, but any casual clothes look good on her. And that to her cheery, optimist and determined personality plus orange-brown hair, blue eyes, and that side ponytail hairstyle, anything she wears gives off that cute aura.

07. Koizumi Hanayo

Koizumi Hanayo Bokura no Live Kimi to no Life

Shy and sometimes quiet (outside her enthusiastic self when doing idol stuff), Hanayo is that perfect high school sweetheart that will take care of you when you’re sick and is more than happy to cook for you. Outside for being an idol and wearing either cute dresses to ridiculously designed ones, Hanayo is very modest with the clothes she wears favoring normal length skirts (anime standard kind of short), pants and the typically patterned sweater. Though her choices are nothing to drool about, it goes well with her high school sweetheart look and her modestly sized breasts. It must be the white rice she loves to eat every day… All the time.

06. Toujou Nozomi

Toujou Nozomi Bokura no Live Kimi to no Life

Aside from her typical casual clothes modern Japanese girls wear, Nozomi wears shrine garbs because she has shrine duties, and is often seen as a traditional Japanese girl like Umi. But unlike Umi, she is more open, playful, and mischievous, especially towards her friends. If Umi is the traditional and well-reserved Yamato Nadeshiko, Nozomi is the free-spirited type who loves to play around. And it’s kinda silly knowing she follows Japanese shrine traditions while reading fortunes with Tarot cards.

[ad_middle]

05. Sonoda Umi

Umi Sonoda Love Live! The School Idol

Umi is a conservative type who is conscious on what she wears. She avoids cute styled dresses and if you force her to wear one, chances are she’ll die of embarrassment within seconds (unless you compliment her that she’s cute). She also prefers wearing full tracksuits during training when running through town or around a school. Eventually, she got used to wearing short skirts and while she still avoids the frilly types, her choice of clothes are often mature and oftentimes unspectacular. However, this goes well with her tall height, long bluish hair, and almost droopy eyes, making her one of the most well dressed and mature-looking girl in the group. A natural Yamato Nadeshiko.

04. Ayase Eli

Eri Ayase Love Live

If you take Eli’s picture in her casual clothing and edit her in magazine covers about fashion, you can easily convince people that Eli is the actual cover girl. Eli is a tall young girl with well-shaped proportions, has blue piercing eyes and has blonde hair, often tied in a ponytail. Plus she’s partly of Russian descent so she’s a natural-born supermodel. Aside from the frilly style clothes µ's use, Eli commonly wears Western-styled clothes like buttoned shirts, preferring jeans with matching boots. Eli’s style of clothing is nothing spectacular, her height and Russian blood makes her one of the mature-looking girl in the group. She does wear a skirt sometimes, but jeans naturally look better on her.

03. Yazawa Nico

Niko Yazawa Bokura no Live Kimi to no Life

Nico, despite her, well, “colorful” personality, she prefers frilly clothes or anything that gives off a cute vibe. You see this in her casual wear, choice of clothes when at home, and the clothes she wears when practicing. Even without the NicoNico personality, frilly clothes goes well with her small build, black hair and her twin tails hairstyle. And let’s not forget the fact that Nico is interested in fashion and she’s µ's costume designer. If you want some of the most stylish of clothes, Nico is the right girl to ask. And for now let’s ignore the fact Nico’s look and personality were retconned in the anime—OH MY GOD WHY DID YOU DO IT SUNRISE?! LADY NICO WAS PERFECT!!! ;_;

Niko Yazawa Bokura no Live Kimi to no Life wallpaper
[sourceLink asin="B00ESAMARO" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

02. Minami Kotori

Kotori Minami Love Live 2

Kotori is no stranger to fashion and like Nico, she is also the costume designer for µ's. She knows how to make the group stand out and let’s not forget that part of the appeal of an idol group is how they look. For the most part, Kotori shares the same style of clothes with Nico, Eli and Maki like wearing coats, buttoned shirts, with patterned scarfs (depending on weather), cotton or linen shorts paired with knee socks, or sometimes jeans. But ultimately, Kotori has natural beauty with long grayish-brown hair, amber eyes topped it off with her pleasing personality and voice that makes any casual clothes look fantastic on her. Remember, she is once known in Akihabara as the “Legendary Maid” due to her combined looks, a personality that goes will with those stylish maid outfits. Oh and a bit of a trivia, according to the Love Live! Diaries, Kotori used to wear longer skirts because she had a defective leg. None of the girls knew this besides Umi. Eventually, Kotori had undergone surgery and started wearing shorter skirts after the marks were gone.

01. Nishikino Maki

Nishikino Maki Love Live!

What makes Maki number one? The simplest answer would be: She looks good with everything. LITERALLY everything. Yeah, that’s it. Some of the girls are good at one or two things like Rin looks good in cute clothes, and nothing much else, while Umi and Eli prefer mature-looking clothes. In Maki’s case, she looks good at everything from frilly clothes, kimonos, suits, and even casual wear. Give her a few clothes and chances are Maki will look good in them. Why is this? It’s the combination of her looks and personality: She has reddish hair, striking purple eyes, with modest height and body sizes. At first glance, she looks very mature and very unapproachable, but once you get to know her, she has the qualities of a tsundere who is unsure of her feelings. She can be very stubborn at times but often shows off her cute side by blushing at silly mishaps, or getting all embarrassed when her friends found out she still believes in Santa Claus. This kind of reasoning won’t give you that definite solid answer, but physical looks and personality is a big contributor when looking good and any plain clothes will look spectacular or stylish if they’re worn by the right person. Maki is arguably the most beautiful girl in the anime and the most versatile when it comes to looking good.

Final Thoughts

If you look at the girls at a glance, they’re your typical teenagers who love wearing clothes they like. But as mentioned before, your looks and your personality add flair to the clothes you wear. Love Live! has a colorful cast of characters and we’ve grown to love them, and in our time we spent with them, you can easily tell that these girls look good in their own way. You could say these girls have style and substance. So what do you think of the list and the rankings of each girl? Please leave your thoughts in the comments section below!

In 2016’s edition to the iconic mecha series, Macross Delta tells the story of how the people of the planet Windermere are rebelling against the United Space Front for their independence, and to conquer the Galaxy. A huge chunk of their plan includes using a virus called the Var to get people of other planets under their control with the help of their singing Prince, Heinz. Counteracting this plan is pop idol group called Walkure (a modern German word for the word Valkyrie, the trademark mechs of the Macross franchise) and their security escorts, the Delta Squadron. Their songs emit an energy fold wave that manages to calm the effects of the Var virus. As with any other mecha series, it is packed with various characters that take us riding through the skies and stars. What also makes this installment of Macross unique is that the characters on both sides compare their combat high to riding like the wind. So for today’s list, we will make a countdown for the Top 10 Wind Riding Macross Delta Characters.

[ad_top2 class="mt40 mb40"]

10. Mikumo Guynemer

Mikumo Guynemer macross delta

Starting off this list is Walkure’s lead singer, Mikumo Guynemer. She has a very powerful voice and a very charismatic presence that naturally reflects her position in the group. She takes a great interest in bringing Freyja into the group and pushes her hard to her fullest potential. Though she is the leader, she is something of a lone wolf and tends to isolate herself from others. Beyond singing, she also participates in spying missions and shows that she is very excellent at it. Whenever she is not in the field, like her enemy Lloyd, she is analyzing the enemy, most especially Prince Heinz’s song and is intrigued by it. Along with Freyja, what positions her as leader is that her singing prowess generates the strongest fold receptor energy waves, which allows her and her team members subdue the effects of the Var virus. Along with this unique ability, her genuine charms as a pop idol mixed with her military mind and discipline which makes her a worthy entry into this list as a wind rider (since her singing also gives her pilots a combat high to achieve that).

9. Ernest Johnson

Ernest Johnson macross delta

Ernest Johnson serves as the Captain to the Macross Elysion, and has a prior relationship with the Windermereian as their former flight instructor. Though he hasn't had the best luck in battles prior to the events of the series, his previous relationship with the Windemerians serves as an advantage in knowing how they operate and has made him an effective leader. Though he is a military officer of large stature (even as a miniature Zentradi, he is still massive), he has a very friendly and relaxing personality. When he taught the King of Windermere, he even found him too serious and chivalrous. But Captain Johnson is a worthy wind rider because he does not allow his mistakes to get the best of him ,and shows that he can learn from them and develop successful counter strategies in some episodes. Even when the going gets tougher when some of his strategies backfire, he goes back to the drawing board, is never afraid to ask for help from his advisors in re-evaluating on what is necessary to get the job done.

8. Chuck Mustang

Chuck Mustang macross delta

In addition to this list is our first ace from the titled Delta unit, Chuck Mustang of the Planet Ragnan. In addition to his piloting duties, he runs his planet’s version of the Nyan Nyan restaurant chain (where Minmei of the first series and Ranka of Frontier also worked) where he takes care of his younger siblings and boards both the Delta pilots of members of Walkure. His numerous contributions to his crew make him a very valuable member. Due to being a fan of Fire Bomber, the featured band from Macross 7, he enjoys naming his attacks after their songs and his cover of Sweet Sixteen makes him a must upworthy wind rider.

7. Roid Brehm

macross delta roid brehm

At lucky seven is Roid Brehm, the brains behind the Windermereian, the villains of this series. He serves as the Chancellor to the Kingdom of Windermere and as the General of its armed forces. He is manipulative as he is cunning. Upon the loss of the King, Roid under the dead King’s orders (or so he claims), claims that they must push on with their rebellion and take over the Galaxy. Due to his position, he is always in his study doing research on how to defeat the enemy and justify his cause that the people of Windermere are the true heirs to their galactic ancestors, the Protoculture. Though he is never shown to be in battle, it is heavily suggested he is trained in combat but his time away from the battlefield has made his skills rusty upon losing an intense sword duel with Keith who he has previously beaten. Though he may not ride the wind in the skies, he is like a mad zealot who wishes to claim the wind for his own lust for power while behind the scenes.

6. Freyja Wion

Freyja Wion Macross Δ delta

Before we move into the top 5 of this list, we have Freyja Wion, the female co-lead at number 6. Though she is a Windemerian, who are the villains of this installment of the Macross saga, her teammates do not doubt her loyalty and still accept her as their own. Freyja is only driven by her dream to become a singer and is willing to make the sacrifices and overcome the obstacles put in front of her. She is willing to put herself in harm's way just like Walkure, the group she joins, just to put on a performance and ultimately bring peace and harmony to the Galaxy. She can be pushed to her limits in the scariest of her situations, but as long as she stays true to herself, her people’s God the wind will guide her to success. Freyja’s singing also allows Hayate to achieve his combat high of riding the wind whenever he’s in a jam as he is always there to support her goals. Due to the average lifespan of her people only being thirty years, she is always living life to the fullest and her presence reminds the cast and the audience to treasure each day of life.

[ad_middle]

5. Mirage Jenius

Mirage Ferina Jenius Macross Delta

Landing in at number five on this list is Mirage Jenius. Mirage happens to be the granddaughter of Max and Milia Jenius from the original Macross series, the top ace pilots of the UN Space fleet and the Zentradi in their prime. Due to her lineage, a lot of pressure and expectation is forced upon her giving her an inferiority complex. Though she may not live up to the skills of her legendary grandparents, she has a strong sense of duty and displays a very serious personality (much like Milia). However, she begins to learn that her flying should not always be by the book and when she becomes flexible with her flying and personality, she is unstoppable and very feminine. Though her personality is stern like a true military officer, her growing relationship with Hayate allows her to develop her other qualities beyond being a pilot and develops a crush on him. Whenever you are in battle, you want Mirage as your wing woman because she will always cover both your 6 and 12 o'clock to get the mission done.

4. Arad Molders

Arad Molders macross delta

Arad Molders serves as the commanding officer of the Delta unit. Recognizing Hayate’s potential and reviewing his resume’, he has a man-to-man talk with Hayate about being the choices he has to make in life and that he can’t go bumming around the Galaxy forever. Hayate accepts his offer but has his own conditions that he has to do things his own way. Arad accepts Hayate’s terms and has him join the unit. His care for his unit also gives him a paternal role to both his men and Walkure by sharing them the philosophical and nutritional benefits of jellyfish, his favorite food. Though he does not have his youth, his flying and leadership skills are shaped by his long experience as a pilot. His experience also provides him excellent intuition for talent and strategy, however, he does harbor a secret in relation to Hayate’s father (who he claims to have only known in passing) and probably why he recruited him.

3. Messer Ihlefeld

Messer Ihlefeld Macross Delta

At number three, we have Messer Ihlefeld, the second in command to the Delta Squadron. He is a no-nonsense leader and is strictly focused exclusively on that being a pilot. Not only does he care about improving his own skills, he contributes to improving the skills of the entire team! Due to his serious nature, he can’t stand Hayate’s carefree attitude and at the same time, he criticizes Mirage’s mastery of her by the book flying style to be too predictable for actual combat! In training exercises, he makes easy work of both of them! He also has a long history with Keith Windermere, the leader of the Aerial Knights, who has long been his equal. Keith even acknowledges Messer as a worthy rider chosen by the wind but in their final battle, you just have to see the series to find out who comes out on top.

2. Keith Windermere

macross delta Keith Aero Windermere

For the runner up, we have Keith Windermere, one of the main antagonists. He is the illegitimate son of the King but his lineage allows him to be the kingdom’s top ace for the elite Aerial Knights unit. His style is to attack non-stop. Due to his aggressive nature, he hates pulling out of missions (due to their purposes of collecting necessary data) when he’s on a roll. He has his own passion for flying and his rivalry (and respect for) with Messer drives him to be the best and not just to claim the skies and the stars, but the wind, which is divine to his people. Though he does not take Hayate, the main character seriously at first, a dog fight that causes him a serious injury makes him reevaluate his potential and despite the result of his eye injury, no way does he let it ground him. He accepts that Hayate is one with the wind but wishes to reclaim it as his own.

1. Hayate Immelmann

Hayate Immelmann

At number one, we have Hayate Immelmann, the main character. Starting this series as a typical anime teenager who is trying to find his way in life who finds little to no meaning with the various jobs he’s had. However, a chance encounter with Mikumo and getting accidentally caught up in battle, he unwillingly pilots a damaged Valkyrie to protect her and shows some natural aptitude for flying. Due to his unauthorized use of military equipment, he is convinced to join the Delta Squad upon the request of its squad commander and likes the idea of just “feeling the wind.” Under the tutelage of Mirage, he quickly goes through the training and becomes an ace (while other previous Macross main characters were pilots, to begin with). Due to his personal principles, he does his best to avoid killing the enemy by shooting in areas that do minimal damage but to the point they can't fight. But as the series progresses, his time with the Delta Squadron allows him to learn more about his father (who has been absent from his upbringing due to being a pilot himself) which will affect his destiny with the core conflict of this series. Even though his father was also a UN Spacy pilot, Hayate feels that he is doing it under his own free will and not for the sake of upholding a family tradition. With Freyja’s singing, he can tap his full potential believing he’s the wind itself.

Final Thoughts

Upon publication of this list, the series is now coming to its close. Macross Delta does a great job of telling its own unique story without any reliance on any of the previous installments. Though some of the characters are typical archetypes seen in other mech series or previous installments, they all have their own unique charms that make them fresh and relatable. Hopefully, in the future, we will get more Macross with its own unique story and set of characters.

It is well known that there’s a lot of anime about music which is a big plus to a lot of fans who are looking not only for a good story, but also for something good for their ears. But when the main plot of the anime is about a band, usually the singer is the one who takes all the credit, while musicians remain in the shadows. So this is our humble tribute to musicians, but not any musician. Only female musicians are allowed here. There are a lot of extremely good female musicians in anime and we think it’s time for them to get their own Top 10.

Despite her reclusive personality, she really cares for the other members of the band. When she is not practicing the drums she is drumming on something with her drumsticks, from tables to jet engines. Later, she and her band mates join the independent military group Sound Force, sharing a variable fighter with Ray Lovelock. She is a powerful drummer, quoting The Stone Roses: “she bangs the drums”.

Michiru is one of the most beautiful characters of this anime, not only because of her physical appearance, but also because of her way of being. She is caring and kind, always with a smile on her face. Brilliant and intelligent, she is a talented and admired young violinist who is already performing her own concerts. She also belongs to the music club and the swimming club of her school: Mugen Gakuen, an elite academy where only brilliant students are enrolled. Her violin, a Stradivarius named Marine Cathédrale, is also used as a weapon in the deep sea violin tide attack, but only in the manga.

7. Yuki Nagato (guitar) from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

She can manipulate the properties and the materials of the environment anyway she wants to, and also is capable of doing things that require superhuman strength, agility, or stamina. Yuki is the only member that joined “voluntarily” to the SOS Brigade. She was reading a book in the empty Literature Club when Haruhi claimed from that moment on it would be the SOS Brigade's clubroom, and Yuki was just fine about it. She is a rational thinker, but prefers body language instead of words. Because of her high level of intelligence she can understand any subject almost instantaneously and that’s why she was able to play the guitar a few moments after receiving one and to memorize a piece of music just from one glance.

6. Touma Kazusa (piano, sax, guitar) from White Album 2

At the beginning of the anime, when Haruki is practicing his guitar, he hears a saxophone playing in the room next to him. They play together every day after school without knowing each other. When Haruki finds out his mysterious partner is Touma, he and Setsuna insist that she join the Light Music Club. She is not only good with the saxophone, but also with the piano. She wants to be as great as her mother, who is a famous trumpeter and by the end of the anime she moves to Vienna to be with her.

She is portrayed like a mysterious girl focused on her way to success. She’s usually distant and only shows her real feelings to her loved ones. Kumiko’s friendship breaks Reina’s walls, and a nicer and more tender side of her character is revealed. Then, Reina confesses that she plays the trumpet because that is her way of being special.

4. Mio Akiyama (bass) from K-on

[2_images_in_row character='Mio Akiyama K-On!' anime='K-on! dvd']

[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" Apr 2009 – Jun 2009 "]

She started playing the bass because Ritsu suggested her to do it. She chose the bass because due to her shyness, she didn’t want to be the center of attention, like the guitarist. She plays a left-handed Fender Jazz Bass named “Elizabeth”, and she does it really well. Mio is very mature despite her age, but she is totally afraid of scary or gore stories. She is a very good student, always getting the top grades of the class. Actually, besides playing the bass, I think studying is her other hobby. She is totally devoted to the Light Music Club and quite technical with regard to music. She taught Yui a few guitar lessons and tutorials. Although she doesn’t like to be in the spotlight, she agreed to act like the lead vocalist in the school festival. Unfortunately, by the end of the concert she fell to the floor exposing her panties, causing her a new trauma.

3. Kaori Miyazono (violin) from Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (Your lie in April)

[2_images_in_row character='Kaori Miyazono' anime='Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso dvd']

[Information episodes=" 22 " aired=" Oct 2014 – Mar 2015 "]

Kaori is a beautiful violinist who helps Kousei Arima return to the piano and face the music again after his mother's death. Kaori’s playing style is just like her personality. She is a free spirit, unpredictable, and sometimes irritable. She doesn’t like to depend on anyone, but she is friendly and supporting of the ones she cares about. Although her interests were changing during her lifetime, the only thing that remains intact was her love for the violin. But her playing style is quite particular as she never follows the music score sheets while performing. Anyway, she is an amazing violinist whose abilities easily exceed the other players. She plays with her heart and with all her emotions.

[Information episodes=" 13 " aired=" Apr 2010 – Jun 2010 "]

I have to confess I have a sort of crush on Masami. She is one of the coolest anime characters I’ve ever seen and she deserves the 2nd place in the list. She isn’t only a great guitar player, but also a talented singer and that is why she formed the Girls Dead Monster band in the Afterlife. Masami is also the lyricist and the music composer of the group. Even though she is usually quiet and silent, she expresses herself through her music. She is described as a “music nut” by her mates because she is really serious and responsible when it comes to music. She had a tough life, her parents were always fighting, and she found shelter in music. Now it’s her life… or rather her afterlife.

Also known as Nodame (Noda – Me/gumi), is a second year music student at Momogaoka Music Academy who plays the piano by ear in an amazing way, so amazing that she tops this ranking. She is the perfect mix between cute and weird, being totally terrible at cooking, living in a messy apartment and referring to herself in third person. But when talking about piano, she is an incredibly talented artist playing in a cantabile style. She has a crush on Chiaki since she first found him drunk in front of her apartment. She follows him everywhere claiming to be his wife and being completely dependent on Chiaki. She also has little ambition to become a professional musician, what she really wants is to become a kindergarten teacher. She gradually changes her attitude toward music because of Chiaki, and starts to be a more serious student. But it really doesn’t matter if she can read a musical score or if she plays by ear, because she plays with so much feeling and passion that you can fly away with her to Nodame’s world.

Final thoughts

As I said in the beginning, anime has a lot of talented female musicians; from pianists to buglers, the list is quite extensive. So extensive that we thought they deserved their own top 10. The positions were determined not judging the technical skills but the passion and personality when playing a musical instrument. I hope you enjoyed the selection, remember it was only about musicians, this time singers were left out. I tried to include different music players to make a varied selection; there are more guitarists and violinists in anime than drummers or saxophonists, for example. If you think there is a great female musician that I left out of the list, please leave a comment and I’ll be happy to answer it.

For over 30 years, Macross along with Evangelion and Gundam franchises rules as one of the best mech powerhouses of all time. Debuting in 1982 to critical acclaim, the series hit international shores as Robotech and gained everlasting popularity. However, many overseas viewers wouldn't recognize it as Japanese animation nearly a decade later. Along with its catchy tunes, captivating stories, and relatable characters, its unique action sequences with its transforming mechs would be its greatest appeal. Some could argue that it helped paved way for the everlasting Transformers franchise. Though it would not have as many sequels and spin-offs as Gundam, Macross still maintains a huge fan base and has produced two new installments in the last decade, Frontier and Delta. For today’s list, we will cover the Top 10 Macross Mechs from the franchise.

10. VF-0 Phoenix (Macross Zero)

[2_images_in_row character='VF-0 Phoenix Macross Zero' anime='Macross Zero dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B0017T3PX2" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Macross Zero Ep 5 In this prequel series taking place a year before the events of the first Macross series (despite being released 20 years after its debut), we have the prototype to the Valkyries, the VF-0 Phoenix models. Only 4 were produced and they were meant for the elite of the elite. Just like its successors, it contains many of the same features of having the base fighter jet mode, battroid mode, and GERWalk mode. Returning from this prequel is the iconic Roy Fokker and his skills as a pilot once again highlights all the great features to this mech. However, due to the events of this series, the only feature it lacks is functionality for space combat. Regardless, it’s capabilities were a great contributor to winning the UN Wars taking place prior to the series with its unique all round features.

9. Reguld Battle Pod (Original Series)

[2_images_in_row character='Regult Macross' anime='Macross dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B000E1ZB7C" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Macross Ep 2 Rivaling the Valkyrie’s from the original series are the Reguld Battle Pods of the Zentradi army. Though not as slick looking as the Valkyrie’s, they get the job done. The design is basic but its core being a sphere-like weapon with chicken legs and can be used in both gravitational conditions and in outer space. It moves with enough agility and speed to accommodate the heavy frames of the giant Zentradi’s. It is equipped with lasers to show a superior force of technology that shows how fearsome they truly are. Along with the generic battle pod design for all around combat purposes, there are other models carrying missiles for long distance and intense combat zones, and scout models carrying mostly radars for reconnaissance purposes.

8. YF-29 Durandal (Macross Frontier Sayounara no Tsubasa)

[2_images_in_row character='YF-29 Durandal Macross Frontier Sayounara no Tsubasa' anime='Macross F Movie 2 Sayonara no Tsubasa dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B005DDM26E" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Macross Frontier Sayounara no Tsubasa In order to combat the Vajra threat in the events of Macross Frontier, the UN Spacy government creates the YF-29, the update to the YF-24 model, which was featured throughout most of the series. The model’s frame is slicker and skinnier compared to other models allowing for less resistance. It can move at speeds at Mach 5.5 and travel beyond Mach 10 for brief periods of time thanks to its inclusion of being equipped with four thermonuclear engines. Next, it is packed with super missiles, a laser and an assault knife for all ranged combat. Last, it also utilizes a special and rare fold quartz stone (which produces the energy necessary hyperspace travel) for energy.

7. VF-171 Nightmare Plus (Macross Frontier)

[2_images_in_row character='VF-171 Nightmare Plus Macross Frontier' anime='macross frontier dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B007W8JUFE" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Macross F Ep 14 The VF-171 Nightmare Plus is the main choice of mech for the UN Spacy during the events of Macross Frontier. In its fighter jet mode (which can travel Mach 20+), its design shares some resemblance to the F-22 Raptor. Due to this base design, when in battroid mode, it tends to look a stockier than other mechs. In addition, its cockpit has also been expanded for effective views. Its design also allows it to have stealth features like real life bombers and also contains other effective defense capabilities such as a pinpoint barrier system. But with a good defense, there must also be a good offense with beat cannons, gun pods, bombs, and missiles. So if you want to do the maximum amount of damage to your enemy with the least amount of damage to your own forces, this is your choice.

6. Av-262Hs Draken III (Macross Delta)

[2_images_in_row character='Sv-262Hs Draken III Macross Delta' anime='Macross Delta dvd']
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B01DLWCEG6" text="" url="" ]

Macross Delta Ep 4 Draken, meaning dragon in Swedish is meant to be the rival to the Siegfried models of the Delta Squad. Under the jurisdiction of the Windemerians’ Aerial Knights elite squadron, the foundational design of this mech is more or less in conjunction with the mechs from the franchise. Due to the Windemerians formally being part of the UN Spacy Alliance and having contracts with other organizations that have access to the same technology, the Windemerians can rebel on equal terms and aim. However, the Drakens have more of an appropriate majestic design with its gold like color schemes and decorations to show that they are under the direct command of the royal family. Thanks to the top skills of the Aerial Knights, the Draken III model is fast, fierce and contains heavy firepower. However, due to the Windemerians religious-like devotion to the wind, they mostly tend to pilot their Draken’s in fighter jet mode and tend to refrain from using the GERwalk and battroid modes.

[ad_middle]

5. VF-19 Custom (Macross 7)

[2_images_in_row character='VF-19 Custom Macross 7' anime='Macross 7 dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B00005HLJU" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Opening theme If mech anime could have its own version to pimped up mechs, the VF-19 custom piloted by Nekki Basara from Macross 7 would certainly be it. If transforming mechs are the way of the future, then this mech has the sound system and control panel you’re looking for. Due to the nature of Basara’s being a musician, as opposed to being used as an offensive weapon, it is a weapon just for Basara to express his music with a kick ass sound system. Granted it has grenades and missiles for defense capabilities, but Basara feels it goes against his principals to use them even in self-defense. What also makes this mech totally awesome is that its control panels are in the shape of a guitar. Due to the unique nature of this mech, it would have to take a unique set of skills to pilot it. Not just regular piloting skills, but unbelievable coordination to be able to perform and dodge enemy attacks at once. Due to Basara never using his mech for attacking, if he did have any sense of offense, he would probably be one of the best pilots ever. But the fact that he uses this mech to change the world through his music shows that even mechs don't have to be used as tools for war.

4. VF-31 Siegfried (Macross Delta)

[2_images_in_row character='VF-31 Siegfried Macross Delta' anime='Macross Delta dvd']
[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B01DLWCEG6" text="" url="" ]

Macross Delta Ep 1 Rivaling the Draken units piloted by the Aerial Knights are the titled Delta Squadrons Siegfried units. With Draken meaning dragon, for those of you who don't know, Siegfried is a figure from Norse Mythology that slays a dragon. Its heavy frame from the back side tends to share some qualities of the United States Air Force’s SR-71 Blackbird, especially with how its wings are pointed and tends to have a bulkier look from its predecessors from previous installments of Macross. As per the rule of thumb, the Siegfried has a fighter jet mode, a GERWalk mode, and a battroid mode for all combat purposes. Regardless, thanks to the crew of Delta consisting of Hayate and Mirage, their performances are reached to its full potential in combat.

3. VF-1S Valkyrie (original series)

[2_images_in_row character='VF-1S Valkyrie Macross' anime='Lynn Minmay’s Finale Macross dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B0056KOCDA" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Macross Do You Remember Love At number three, we have the mech that contributes to the identity of this series, the granddaddy, the Valkyrie model. It was one of the first mechs that could transform on its own (though the original Gundam needed the G-Fighter to transform). Due to the discovery by scientists that the SDF-1 Macross was meant to accommodate giant beings, the mech mode of the Valkyrie gave our heroes some equal ground in hand-to-hand combat. In addition to its fighter plane mode, it could transform into a robot, and also coined the term and transformation, GERwalk, where the upper body was still in fighter jet mode (and have arms exposed) but had the legs of a mech (and the legs aren't just for show). This transformation allows excellent mobility and effective coordination in crowded conditions such as cities. In addition, this mech also serves as the basis for Skyfire/Jetfire, a character from the legendary Transformers franchise. Thanks to special nuclear engineering, it can also be used for space conditions. Though other mech anime like to emphasize on laser, this mech emphasizes more on realistic high caliber weaponry and misses.

2. YF-21 (Macross Plus)

[2_images_in_row character='YF-21 Macross Plus' anime='Macross Plus dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B00FL7OHBK" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Macross Plus the movie Arguably the most powerful and consequently the most dangerous mech from the Macross franchise is the prototypical YF-21, code named the Omega One. Its test pilot was Guld Goa Bowman, one of the very few pilots physically and mentally capable of handling the features of this mech and he was barely able to handle it in the end. What makes this mech most unique is its piloting system is more neutral as opposed to manual with the expectations for better reaction time and reflexes. It also contains stealth and great defensive capabilities. Along with that, it allows for a maximum offensive in sneak attacks. Unfortunately, its piloting system would serve to be counter intuitive and affect the brain chemistry of the pilot and the reverse. Despite its potential, the UN Spacy Unit knew that the consequences outweighed the benefits of this system and decided to scrap it (in addition that it would cost too much money).

1. SDF-1 Macross (Original Series)

[2_images_in_row character='SDF-1 Macross Macross' anime='Lynn Minmay’s Finale Macross dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B0056KOCDA" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]

Macross Do You Remember Love The number one has to go the granddaddy of them all, the original SDF-1 Macross. It serves as a battleship that can transform to a mech (which has a frightening mega cannon), and inside it contains a military base and a regular city. Originally crashing in the South Pacific in 1999, numerous researchers spent 10 years studying it and reverse engineering it for potential re-use. It took 10 years, but they got the job done. Unfortunately, the Zentradi compromises its maiden voyage. It also contains a special warp drive known as “space folding” in which it can travel in the space between spaces for space travel going beyond the speed of light. Unfortunately, its first attempt landed the Macross and its crew on the opposite side of the solar system. But after the events of the series, it was severely damaged but repairable. Upon what could be repaired, it stayed on Earth in a display with enough operation to serve for Earth’s defenses. Thanks to the technology of the Macross, it paves for the other mechs such as the Valkyrie’s and demonstrates that maybe space travel for both exploration and defense is possible.

Final Thoughts

Maybe in the future, the mechs of the Macross series will serve as tools for the military and/or productive civilian use. Wouldn't it be cool to apply this unique type of engineering in real life? Of course, nobody wants war, but we’re talking about the use of such technology for space travel. Maybe some hit rock band will use such mechs for awesome shows like with Fire Bomber from Macross 7, or maybe music will be the “weapon” of the future and these mechs will serve as a supporting squad. Who knows what the future truly holds? But if anything, Honey feels confident that this list may be the best for what is to come. So what do you readers and Macross fans think? Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments.

Anime and music have always gone hand-in-hand. OT’s, ET’s, and soundtracks can have a major impact on an anime. They have a certain identity all on their own and they push the envelope of what can be expected from a show. Now those elements can be expected in any show. However, some shows push the envelope and incorporate music more intimately through the entire narrative. In these shows, there tends to be male musicians who grab our attention with either their voice or looks episode after episode.

Now Prince of Stride revolves around the sport of “Stride,” which is like a mix between parkour, tricking, and relay. In this world, Honan Academy used to be considered one of the great schools of the sport but has recently fallen out of commission. Thankfully with the new year, an awesome trio of athletes come to the school and join the Stride Club. One of the main schools challenging, as well as pushing, Honan along to greatness is Saisei Academy. Their leader and anchor for every race is Reiji Suwa, who in good-natured rivalry has been giving Honan every chance to catch up for lost time. More than being just a young man of honor and competitive spirit, he also happens to be the leader of the pop idol group Galaxy Star. It’s a huge group in this world, and it’s a group that the entire Saisei Stride Club compose using separate identities. The group is particular enchanting and it’s rather amusing that they only do this whole pop group in order to train their endurance.

9. Brook from One Piece

[2_images_in_row character='one piece brook' anime='One Piece dvd']
[sourceLink asin="B006Z20ZLG" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 700+ " aired=" Oct. 1999 – ongoing. "]

One Piece is one of those anime that everyone knows about, and everyone has at least watched some section of it. Most likely not the whole series as that is one painfully long anime, but bits and pieces here and there as it’s hard not to find this pirate-fueled anime enjoyable. Now, the One Piece universe has a ton of characters to love, but few (in any anime for that matter) don the threads of rock gods like Brook. Brook can basically play any instrument, with the main two we see on screen being the violin and the guitar. He also happens to be a pretty well-to-do pirate with good combat experience and pretty impressive endurance. However, that’s besides the point. Brook truly shines when music is dancing from his instruments accompanied by his voice’s otherworldly and beautiful rendition of “Yoho”. His music is soothing and generally has the ability to change another person’s mind as well as show just how far the Straw Hat crew has come.

8. Shinjirou Kurama from Kamisama Kiss

Kamisama Kiss depicts the trials and tribulations that fall upon Nanami Momozono as she takes on the duty of being a goddess of a shrine. It would have been one thing if all she had to do was keep up its appearances, but attached to the shrine is the wily and stubborn fox spirit, Tomoe. He definitely makes things harder, but Nanami is determined to win his trust as well as perhaps his heart. Though he’s only a supporting character in the anime, Shinjirou Kurama is rather a fun spectacle to watch. To the outside world he is an insanely popular idol with the gimmick of being a fallen angel. Basically, everyone sees him as perfection incarnate. However, in reality he is a crow tengu, who not only initially planned on killing Nanami, but is quite the klutz when dealing with either Nanami or Tomoe. For all of his idol suave he really can’t function as a murderous spirit, which isn’t too bad of a trait in reality. In fact, it’s the fact that he sucks at killing that allows us to see the kinder side of him later on.

7. Ichiro from Nerima Daikon Brothers

Thus, with his fellow musicians, Mako and Ichiro; Hideki finds himself consistently face-to-face with the crime bosses and villains who have insane amount of villains. Will the Nerima Daikon Brothers consistently be able to thwart the bad guys and make off with the cash is question asked in each and every glorious episode. Despite Hideki being the main protagonist, Ichiro’s nonchalance and deadpan voice brings a special humor to the show. Though the show makes fun of itself on a constant basis, Ichiro is the vocal point for such occasions. While the others are running terrified in full tilt, he’s carrying along as if it’s all some sort of game. His facial expressions and attitude generally act in a way that mock the others, and none are as great as the moment when he sings to Mako how he’ll never lover her. The guy’s a class act.

6. Kakeru from Starmyu

Starmyu is extremely reminiscent of Prince no Uta Sama. It follows five promising musicians into the high renowned musical department of Ayanagi Academy, and how they go about excelling in their artistic endeavors. Though not devoid of competition and rivalry, the boys become pillars of support for one another, and help each other grow personally as well as interpersonally. One of these students showing incredible skill is Kakeru, a famous Kabuki actor, who comes from a noble family. At first he has quite the reputation behind him, coming off as consistently cold and a possible womanizer. As he does have some pride issues, his coldness and possible desire to conquer women seem rather fitting. However, in truth, he just has a cat, which he loves tremendously. Kakeru’s main form of development comes from learning to appreciate the talents and help of others thanks to the kindness that Yuuta showed him.

Uta no Prince Sama takes viewers into the highly acclaimed Saotome Academy, where the most promising performing arts students go to perfect their crafts. Following Haruka Nanami’s first year into the academy, we get a special glimpse into the lives and artistic expressions of several of the students. Ultimately, this various bunch of students are brought together musically into a group that promises to topple the entertainment industry. One of the aspiring musicians who finds himself entrapped by Haruka and her talents is Natsuki. Now Natsuki plays the viola, used to play the violin, and can sing quite eloquently. Though these talents alone don’t particularly put him above the rest of the musicians that compose the UtaPri boy band. However, Natsuki has a second personality, who goes by the name Satsuki. Compared to the gentle at times woeful music that fans out from Natsuki, the music that Satsuki performs is tumultuous and aggressive. As a result, he has an extremely wide range that none of the others can actually compare to.

Shuichi with his best friend Hiro have formed the band Bad Luck in pursuit of chasing after his favorite pop idol Ryuichi Sakuma. Now, these friends have made some headway into the entertainment industry as they have successfully been signed to a major recording label, but with deadlines coming up for singles and an album, Shuichi is struggling with writing songs. It doesn’t help (or does it) when he runs into Yuki Eiri, a young writer, at a park and gets verbally wrecked by Yuki. Shuichi is that character you can’t help but cheer for. He’s energetic, hyper and extremely innocent. In fact, his innocence plays a huge part throughout the show, as it plays into his massive mood swings. It also explains why he breaks into chibi form frequently as well as why his singing is affected both positively and negatively by his relationship with Eiri. Though he is used in comedic ways often, you won’t be able to ignore his obvious talent and perseverance that keeps the show’s plot moving.

3. Sakuya Ookouchi from Kaikan Phrase

2. Koyuki from Beck: Mongolian Chop Squad

[sourceLink asin="B007NU546U" asin_jp="" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes=" 26 " aired=" Oct. 2004 – Mar. 2005 "]

This anime follows Yukio Tanaka (Koyuki) as he falls in love with music and joins the group Beck. Led by Ryuusuke Minami, the ragtag group Beck takes on Japan’s music scene, doing it’s best to create a unique mix of bluesy rock that will pave the way to international fame. During each leg of this journey, the anime proves itself to be a coming of age story that chases down young love, creative differences, international crime, and of course rock. Now Koyuki doesn’t seem to be much of a rock star at first glance. He’s quiet, constantly embarrassed, and barely able to speak his mind to others. However, he does have a particularly unique voice and one that becomes more and more developed with his “underground” attitude as he becomes closer with Ryuusuke and other members of Beck. By the end, of the series, he’s standing alone on a concert belting out a song that’s hypnotizing the crowd, and you as well.

1. Souichi Negishi from Detroit Metal City

Detroit Metal City tails the young Souichi Negishi, who wishes to pursue a career as a pop star. However, this dream is one in the works and to keep those gears turning he finds himself taking on the lead singer position of the death metal band Detroit Metal City. Becoming the lead singer of a death metal group has given Souichi a new vocal range and vocabulary to say the least. It’s hard to imagine words like “bitch” and “ “ to come out of the quiet and good-natured Souichi’s mouth. However, when donning the guise of Krauser, he can commit practically any crime he so desires and it’s generally to great comedic affect. Despite the anime’s incredibly contrasting natures, it still holds true to some musical integrity. Souichi’s grasp of rhythm and wordplay allow him to roam through several different genres to an amazing degree. It’s quite epic to watch him scream out a song like Demon King to humming out the melodic Raspberry Kiss to picking up a basic rap pattern when listening to it for the first time and incorporating death metal lyrics into it.

Music is an important aspect of any and every anime, but it’s always a nice touch to find characters who have the power of song within them. Whether being a musician is more for gimmick or an actual in-depth part of the character, such characters generally have very unique personalities that are expressed in amazing ways. Are there any male singers out there in the anime world that you feel deserve a spot on this list?

From the same makers of Uta no Prince-sama comes another male idol anime, B-PROJECT, also widely known simply as B-PRO. Sumisora Tsubasa who has formerly worked at a CD shop was suddenly recruited in the A&R Department as a trainee under Gandala Music. She is assigned to be the manager of B-Project, which consists of 3 different units: Kitakore, THRIVE, and MooNs. Join Tsubasa as she explores the world of dazzling male idols!

3 Major similarities shared by Uta no Prince-sama and B-Project

1. A Supportive Heroine

Nanami Haruka and Sumisora Tsubasa have a lot in common. From being surrounded by dashing male idols to having a unique talent when it comes to music, these two heroines are almost one and the same with only the appearance and the voice being different. The heroines of both shows are shy and a bit jittery at first, but as the show progresses, they become more open to the people around them. Nanami and Sumisora are also naive and clumsy girls! They are both sweet, modest, optimistic, and honest characters. Just like Nanami, who uses her great talent of composing amazing music, Sumisora, has a keen hearing ability that can detect any subtle sounds or tunes around her. Along with using their talents to support the male idols around them, Nanami and Sumisora also provide insights and reflective messages to the boys when they feel backed into a corner.

2. Quest for Stardom

Being an Idol who is loved by many is very hard to achieve. One has to work hard again and again to be recognized by a lot of people. UtaPri and B-PRO definitely show to viewers that stardom isn’t only gained by simply dreaming and believing. It takes time and effort to give a near perfect performance. In UtaPri, students who are enrolled at Saotome Academy are trained to be future superstars. From acting to singing, to dancing, to writing songs, everything is in this academy is in here if one wants to be in the entertainment industry. In B-PRO, however, each unit -Kitakore, THRIVE, and MooNs- are already well-known on their own. But there is a catch, B-PRO as a whole isn’t doing quite well for the fans, hence the reason why they try to improve themselves more. As they harness their talents and skills, they also grow as characters. It does take time to see the results of their hard efforts, whether big or small, but once you get a glimpse of it, it’s worth it!

All groups have their own distinctive music that will surely melt the viewer’s hearts.

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="B01GCHDU7E" text="" url="" ]
[Information episodes="13" aired="Jul. 2016- Currently Airing"]

Tsukiuta started off as an original drama CD series that features the music produced by different famous Vocaloid producers and sung by highly acclaimed Seiyuus. Each song is themed by the twelve months of the year and is represented by two idols (one male and one female) that will perform the song. Because of its success, Tsukiuta. The Animation was made which mainly focuses on the two male idol groups in the Drama CDs, Six Gravity and Procellarum with only the female idol groups, Eluna and Seleas making a cameo appearance in the show. Same as the Drama CDs, each episode features a different character.

3 Major similarities shared by Uta no Prince-sama and Tsukiuta. The Animation

1. The Story behind the Shining Stars

Although Idols are widely well-known, they are still humans which have their very own stories to tell. Much like how UtaPri uses Nanami as a way to know the backstories of its male idol characters, Tsukiuta uses the same approach by featuring a character one episode at a time. Though as the show goes on, other members of the group start to join in, making who is the currently featured character a bit vague. Because of this, we only get a little glimpse of who they really are. (But hey, we get to see more funny interactions between the characters.) Nonetheless, viewers are given the chance to see why these characters choose to be idols. Viewers get to know their dreams, aspirations, struggles, and how they’ve come to be as they are.

2. Passion, Drive, Dedication, and Life of a Male Idol

If you think trying to start as an idol is the hardest part, wait till you already get famous. Mostly, people assume that once an idol is already famous, they already have it easy. Well, it’s not. Being at the top and maintaining that status is difficult. One has to have the passion, drive, and dedication to move even higher, especially in this kind of industry where the competition is high. Idols must constantly show something new and extraordinary to keep their fans continuously entertained. Much like the later parts of UtaPri, Tsukiuta’s Six Gravity and Procellarum only get better and better at what they are doing. None of the members ever forget to develop and enhance their talents and skills to give the best performance. They also somehow find a way to show and express themselves to their fans in every different way possible, making the fans love them even more. It also shows to viewers the hectic but fun life of a male idol. They don’t simply sing and dance, they also do T.V. dramas, commercials, photo shoots, interviews, and other different entertainment skits that Idols usually do. Sometimes, they also face hurdles in their careers which they face head on with the help of the other members of the group.

[sourceLink asin="" asin_jp="" text="Uta no Prince-sama Ep 7" url="" ]

3. Bizzare Adventures and Interaction between Characters

If you expecting something normal with Tsukiuta, then don’t bother as it has the same bizarre scenarios as UtaPri. Although it has a more realistic take on idols in general than UtaPri, from time to time, it deviates from this. From ghosts to goddesses, to being trapped on an island because of lighting, to solving who broke the glasses, Tsukiuta’s story becomes weirder with each episode. Of course, bizarre scenarios come with silly interactions between characters as well. As mentioned earlier regarding Tsukiuta, as the show progresses, different characters interact more often. It ranges from funny ones to touching ones. Like for instance, in UtaPri, ST☆RISH and QUARTET NIGHT have a degree of that friendly rivalry. But since QUARTET NIGHT are the senpai of ST☆RISH, they still teach their kouhai necessary things in order for them to become successful idols. In Tsukiuta, despite Six Gravity and Procellarum being rivals, they practically act together as one big family that helps one another.

Conclusion

So there you have it. That’s it for another Like this? Watch this! segment. Even though Uta no Prince-sama wasn’t the very 1st male idol anime to come out, it still managed to pave the way for male idol anime to be more recognized by the anime community. It gave us good music to listen to, intriguing characters and a story to keep our attention. Just like Uta no Prince-sama, B-PROJECT and Tsukiuta showcase great music and a large talented seiyuu cast. Well? Did we manage to convince you to watch these two airing shows? They surely will not disappoint, especially if you really loved Uta no Prince-sama. I bid farewell for now and as always, now signing off~
